If your garage tells you 'you need a new turbo,' ask them if they’ve performed a vacuum sweep test on the VGT actuator first. If the actuator doesn't move smoothly from 0 to 20 inches of mercury on a hand pump, it’s likely just carbon-clogged. Insist they try a 'Revive' or 'Forth' intake clean first—it’s a £100 service that can often free up sticking vanes without pulling the whole unit out. If the car only cuts out when you're overtaking on the motorway, it's almost certainly the vanes sticking under load.
