Turbocharger overboost on Ford EcoBoost — usually a stuck wastegate actuator or boost-control solenoid fault.
Ford P0234 — Turbocharger overboost on Ford EcoBoost — usually a stuck wastegate actuator or boost-control solenoid fault. Typical UK independent garage cost: £160–£1200.
What actually causes P0234 on a Ford
P0234 is the opposite of P0299 — instead of underboost, the turbo is producing more boost than commanded. On EcoBoost engines it's usually a sticking wastegate actuator (the rod won't open the wastegate when commanded), a failing electric boost control solenoid, or a poorly-installed aftermarket remap with overaggressive boost mapping.
Ford engines that log P0234
- 1.0 EcoBoost (Fiesta, Focus, Puma, EcoSport)
- 1.5 EcoBoost (Focus, Kuga, Mondeo)
- 1.6 EcoBoost (Focus ST-Line, Kuga)
- 2.0 EcoBoost (Mondeo, Kuga, Focus ST)
How we diagnose P0234 on a Ford
- Scan tool: log commanded vs actual boost during full-throttle acceleration
- Check wastegate actuator rod for free movement with engine off — should slide easily
- Test boost control solenoid electrically and via vacuum/pressure tester
- Inspect wastegate linkage for corrosion or seized pivot point
- Check for non-OEM software (remap) and revert to stock as a diagnostic step
The common misdiagnosis to avoid
If the car has been remapped, get the remap reverted to stock before chasing parts — many P0234 codes on EcoBoost are caused by software demanding more boost than the wastegate can physically vent.
Ford P0234 repair cost in the UK
Expect £160–£1200 including parts and labour at an independent garage. Main-dealer quotes on Ford are usually higher for the same job, and the spread exists because the cheap cause and the expensive cause throw the same code — pay for the diagnosis before you pay for parts.
Bob's workshop tip
1.0 EcoBoost wastegate actuators are notorious for seizing in the closed position after a few cold winters — a little free-up with penetrating oil and exercising the rod can buy you another year before replacement.

Symptoms drivers report with P0234
- The car goes into 'limp mode' (no power) specifically when accelerating hard up a hill in 4th or 5th gear.
- Engine picks up speed, then suddenly 'cuts out' or jerks, requiring you to turn the ignition off and back on to reset.
- A loud whistling or 'siren' noise under load that stops abruptly when the ECU cuts boost.
- The 'Service Engine Soon' or glow plug light flashing when you're trying to join a dual carriageway.
- The car feels unusually fast for a few seconds before the dash lights up and it loses all power.
Repairs that clear P0234
- Clean / replace VGT actuator
- Replace wastegate actuator
- Replace boost sensor
- Replace boost solenoid
- Inspect and replace boost vacuum pipework
