Turbocharger overboost on BMW N20/N55 — wastegate rattle and solenoid faults are the headline causes.
BMW P0234 — Turbocharger overboost on BMW N20/N55 — wastegate rattle and solenoid faults are the headline causes. Typical UK independent garage cost: £240–£2800.
What actually causes P0234 on a BMW
BMW N20 and N55 turbos are well-known for wastegate rattle — the wastegate linkage wears, the wastegate doesn't seat fully, and under certain conditions the ECU sees boost overshoot and stores P0234. On N55, the boost control solenoid failure is also common. BMW has TSBs covering replacement of the wastegate-actuator-equipped turbocharger assembly on early N20 engines.
BMW engines that log P0234
- N20 2.0 turbo (3, 5 Series, X1, X3)
- N55 3.0 turbo (3, 5, 6, 7 Series, X3, X5)
- B48 2.0 (newer 3, 5 Series, X3)
How we diagnose P0234 on a BMW
- Listen at idle for wastegate rattle (sounds like a diesel injector tick) — N20 classic
- ISTA: log boost requested vs actual under load
- Test electric boost control solenoid response
- Check VIN against BMW extended warranty database for wastegate / turbo replacement programme
- If turbo confirmed at fault, quote complete unit (wastegate not serviceable separately)
The common misdiagnosis to avoid
Don't accept a 'just a sensor' quote on an N20 with audible wastegate rattle — the turbo itself needs replacement and BMW extended warranties on these in many markets.
BMW P0234 repair cost in the UK
Expect £240–£2800 including parts and labour at an independent garage. Main-dealer quotes on BMW are usually higher for the same job, and the spread exists because the cheap cause and the expensive cause throw the same code — pay for the diagnosis before you pay for parts.
Service campaign / TSB note
BMW extended goodwill on N20 wastegate / turbocharger issues UK and EU markets.
Bob's workshop tip
Many UK N20 owners have had complete turbocharger replacements under BMW goodwill years out of warranty — always check the VIN before quoting the customer.
