Cheap route: garage throws a £20 ECT (engine coolant temp) sensor at it — occasionally works on VAG cars but on 80% of P0128s the sensor is reading correctly and reporting a genuine cold engine. Expensive route: main dealer diagnoses a 'faulty water pump' at £600+ when the pump is fine and the stat is the £45 part. Before touching anything, ask the garage to read live ECT temperature on a scan tool during a 25-minute drive: if coolant plateaus below 82°C the thermostat is stuck open (P0128 is correct), if it climbs normally to 88–92°C then the ECT sensor is drifting cold (replace sensor, not stat). On BMW N43/N46/N47 and Mini Prince engines specifically, the thermostat is electronically 'mapped' — the ECU commands it open early for emissions and closed later for warm-up, so a faulty stat solenoid gives P0128 even when the mechanical wax pellet is fine; only a scan tool that can command the stat actuator will diagnose these properly.

Bob's winter rule: if your car does mainly 3–8 mile trips through a UK winter, P0128 is almost inevitable eventually — the thermostat wax pellet fatigues from thousands of partial-open cycles. Two things that delay it. First, once a week take the car out for a 30–40 minute steady run at 55–70 mph to let the whole cooling system reach full temperature and the stat close properly. Second, when the stat does go, fit an OE-spec temperature part (usually 88°C or 92°C — check your handbook) and NEVER a cheap 82°C 'performance' one from eBay: a low-temperature stat will store P0128 straight out of the box on a modern EU6 car. If you drive a Ford EcoBoost 1.0 or PSA 1.6 HDi, ask the garage to inspect the surrounding coolant hoses at the same time — those engines usually leak within 5,000 miles of a stat change if the hoses aren't done as a pair.
