On all of these Ford engines P0128 is overwhelmingly a thermostat that has failed open — coolant circulates through the radiator continuously, the engine never reaches 88–92°C, and the ECU flags it. On 1.0 EcoBoost the integrated thermostat housing (plastic) is also prone to cracking and leaking. On 1.6/2.0 TDCi the housing is metal but the thermostat itself sticks open at high mileage. Drivers often notice poor MPG, slow heater warm-up, and a temperature gauge that never reaches the centre mark.

Don't accept a 'coolant temperature sensor' quote (£60+ part) until the thermostat has been ruled out — the sensor reading is almost always correct; it's the coolant that genuinely isn't hot enough.

Reading P0128 on a Ford properly

A generic reader will show P0128 and nothing else. What matters is the freeze-frame data stored with it — engine speed, load, coolant temperature and fuel trims at the moment the fault was logged — plus whether any other module on the Ford has logged something at the same time. Codes rarely arrive alone, and the order they were stored in usually points at which one is the cause and which are the consequences.

Clearing P0128 without fixing it

Erasing the code resets the Ford's readiness monitors as well as the light.
