On the 1.4 Turbo and 1.6 Z16XER the plastic thermostat housing fails — either the thermostat itself sticks open or the housing cracks and leaks coolant onto the alternator. The housing is sold as a complete assembly. On 1.7 CDTI diesels the thermostat in the EGR cooler area sticks open, often combined with EGR coolant leaks. Symptoms: slow warm-up, cold heater, poor MPG, sometimes a coolant smell from the front of the engine.
