How to find the serial number:
Try holding button 6 with the ignition on and the radio off — later Tuner List units display the pre-code.
Otherwise, extract the unit with two U-shaped keys.
Read the PRE-CODE line on the barcode label — a letter plus three digits.
Photograph the whole label so you also capture the longer serial as a backup.
How to key the code in:
Set the digits with presets 1 to 4, or the rotary control on later units.
Hold button 6 or press OK to confirm.
Wait for the unit to switch to normal radio operation.
Worth knowing:
Megane II (2002–2008): Update List unit. Card-key models still use the same audio pre-code arrangement.
Megane III (2008–2016): the head unit sits under the centre vents behind a wide trim panel — release the panel evenly, starting at the lower edge.
Megane IV (2016 on): mostly R-Link 2 touchscreens, which do not typically ask for a four-digit audio code.
On Megane II, a failing card reader or a weak battery can cause repeated code prompts — worth diagnosing rather than just re-entering the code.
Why does my Megane ask for the code repeatedly? Repeated prompts almost always mean the permanent live is dropping — a tired battery, corroded terminals or a poor earth. Fix the supply and the prompt stops.
Is the pre-code the same as the radio code? No. The pre-code identifies the unit; the four-digit unlock code is derived from it.
Does Megane IV need a radio code? R-Link 2 systems generally do not use a four-digit audio code.
