A Renault radio asks for its security code after the head unit loses its permanent live feed — a flat battery, a battery change, a jump start or the radio being unplugged. When you'll be asked for the code:
After the battery has gone flat or been disconnected
After a battery or alternator replacement
When the radio has been removed to fit a reverse camera, DAB aerial or hands-free kit
On Clio, Megane and Trafic vans where a corroded earth intermittently cuts the permanent live
Serial number formats:
Pre-code (most common) — for example K123. One letter plus three digits, printed on the radio label as PRE-CODE or PRECODE.
Unit serial — for example T1234567890. Longer number on the same label — useful where the pre-code has worn off.
Update List / Tuner List units — for example A045. Later Megane and Scenic units use the same short format.
How to find the serial number:
On many Renault units, switch the radio off, then press and hold button 6 (or 1 and 6 together on some models) for a few seconds — the pre-code appears on screen.
If nothing shows, the pre-code is printed on the barcode label on the top or side of the unit casing.
Removing a Renault radio normally needs two U-shaped extraction keys pushed into the slots either side until they click.
On Trafic and Master vans the unit is deep in the dash — take your time and disconnect the battery before pulling the harness.
Note the pre-code exactly. A letter O and a zero are easy to confuse on a worn label.

The display should return to normal radio operation.
What is a Renault pre-code? It is the short identifier — normally a letter plus three digits, such as K123 — printed on the radio label. Renault codes are worked out from that pre-code, so it is the one piece of information you cannot proceed without.
Can I get a Renault code from my VIN? No. Renault codes belong to the head unit, and a VIN only tells you what the car left the factory with. If the radio has ever been swapped, a VIN-based answer would be wrong.
How many wrong attempts before my Renault radio locks? Typically three. After that the unit goes into a timed lockout. Leave the radio powered on with the ignition in accessory and wait — switching off usually restarts the timer.
