Focus by generation — what you are dealing with
Mk1 cars from 1998 to 2004 carry the 4500 RDS cassette unit or the 5000C CD unit. Neither will show you a serial on screen, so on a Mk1 you can skip the button combinations entirely and go straight for the radio keys. Mk2 from 2004 to 2011 is where the 6000CD is standard and the 1-and-6 hold works reliably. Mk2.5 facelift cars from 2008 sometimes carry a Sony CD unit, which is the same method with a different fascia.
Mk3 from 2011 splits. Non-touchscreen Sony and Ford CD/DAB units still respond to the button hold. Anything with SYNC 2 or a touchscreen is vehicle-coded and will not ask for an audio code at all — if a battery change left your Mk3 asking for a four-digit number, you have the button-panel unit, not SYNC.
The Focus centre console trap
The Focus console trim is clipped rather than screwed, and on a Mk2 the clips are behind the top edge of the surround. Ease it forward evenly with a wide nylon tool rather than pulling from one corner — the tabs snap easily on a fifteen-year-old car and a replacement surround is more expensive than the code. On the Mk1 the radio aperture trim comes off with the heater surround as one piece.
Once the fascia is clear, all four Ford keys go in together and the unit slides straight out. Keep a hand under it; the Focus cage has nothing supporting the unit once the catches release, and dropping it onto the gear lever gaiter is how the casing label gets scuffed.
Common Focus lockout messages
WAIT means a timed lockout is running. Keep the ignition in position II — the timer only counts while the unit is powered, so the common mistake of switching the car off and coming back in an hour actually resets it to the start. Thirty to sixty minutes is typical on a first lockout.
A Focus that asks for the code every week has a permanent live problem. On Mk2 cars particularly, check the battery and the passenger-side fusebox before assuming the radio is dying. It is almost always the battery on a car doing short runs.
