Serial number formats:
6000CD / 6000CD RDS E-O-N — for example V123456. Most Focus, Fiesta, Mondeo and Transit units from 1998 onward.
5000C / 4500 RDS — for example M123456. Older Escort, Ka and early Focus units — usually read from the label.
Sony DAB / CD (Mk7–Mk8) — for example V123456 or C123456. Later Fiesta and Focus Sony-branded units.
How to find the serial number:
Turn the ignition to accessory so the radio powers up and shows CODE or LOCKED.
On a 6000CD, press and hold buttons 1 and 6 together. The display cycles through the unit type, then a serial starting with V, M or C.
On Sony units, press and hold buttons 1 and 6 (or 3 and 6 on some DAB units) with the radio switched on.
If nothing appears on screen, the serial is printed on a white label on the top or side of the radio casing — that means removing the unit with a pair of Ford radio keys.
Write the serial down exactly, including the leading letter. A V misread as a 5 is the usual reason a code comes back wrong.

How to key the code in:
Use the preset buttons 1 to 4 to set each digit. Button 1 increments the first digit, button 2 the second, and so on.
Press and hold button 5 (or the seek/OK button on Sony units) to submit the code.
The radio should show CODE OK or simply start playing.
If you are one digit out, press the correct preset again to cycle round rather than starting over.
Can I get a Ford radio code from my registration number? No. Ford codes are tied to the serial number of the head unit itself, not the vehicle. A registration lookup cannot identify which radio is currently fitted, especially on older cars where units are often swapped.
My Ford radio shows WAIT — what do I do? Leave the ignition in position II with the radio switched on. The countdown only runs while the unit is powered. Switching off restarts it. Depending on the number of failed attempts it can take from 30 minutes to a couple of hours.
Do I need to remove the radio to get the serial? Usually not on a 6000CD or Sony unit — the 1 and 6 button trick displays it. Older 5000C and 4500 RDS units often need the radio out to read the label.
Is the Ford radio code written anywhere in the car? Sometimes. Check the owner's handbook wallet, the service book, or a small card in the glovebox. Some dealers also wrote it inside the fuse box cover.
