A Ford radio security code is a four-digit number tied to the individual head unit, not to the car. Ford fitted it as an anti-theft measure: if the unit loses permanent live feed, it refuses to play until the code is entered. Swapping the radio into another Ford does not clear it.

How to find the serial number:

On Sony units, press and hold buttons 1 and 6 (or 3 and 6 on some DAB units) with the radio switched on.
If nothing appears on screen, the serial is printed on a white label on the top or side of the radio casing — that means removing the unit with a pair of Ford radio keys.
Write the serial down exactly, including the leading letter. A V misread as a 5 is the usual reason a code comes back wrong.

How to key the code in:
Use the preset buttons 1 to 4 to set each digit. Button 1 increments the first digit, button 2 the second, and so on.

If you are one digit out, press the correct preset again to cycle round rather than starting over.
Reading the serial on screen — the bit most people miss
The 1-and-6 trick is the reason Ford is the easiest make on the list, and it works on the vast majority of 6000CD units from 1998 onward. Ignition to position II so the radio has power, press and hold presets 1 and 6 together, and the display runs through the unit type — something like 6000 CD RDS EON — then a line beginning M, V or C followed by six digits. That second line is the serial. If the display cycles too quickly, press and hold again; it loops.
Some Sony-badged Mk7 Fiesta and Mk3 Focus units want 3 and 6 rather than 1 and 6. A few late Sony DAB units show the serial under the menu as a unit information screen instead. If you get nothing on any combination, you have one of the units that genuinely does not support it — the 4500 RDS, 5000C and the basic Transit Audio — and the label on the casing is the answer.
Pulling a Ford unit when the screen won't help
Ford radio keys are four flat steel pins, about £5 a set, and they are the only correct way in. Push all four fully home into the slots in the corners of the fascia until you feel them click, then pull them apart slightly and draw the unit straight out. Levering a Ford unit with screwdrivers wrecks the fascia and usually does not release the catches anyway.
The white label on the top of the casing carries the serial and, on most units, the code itself is not printed anywhere — so do not waste time hunting for it. Note the full serial including the letter. A V read as a 5 and an M read as an H account for most rejected codes we see.

Ford permanent live feeds to the radio run through a fuse in the passenger compartment box and, on older Focus and Transit, through connectors that corrode. Check the battery first — a battery that reads 12.4V rested but collapses under load will drop the radio's memory long before it fails to crank the engine.
The other regular cause is a poorly fitted aftermarket accessory: dash cams and trackers wired into the wrong feed, or a hands-free kit spliced into the radio's permanent live. Disconnect anything recently added and see if the lockouts stop.
Can I get a Ford radio code from my registration number? No. Ford codes are tied to the serial number of the head unit itself, not the vehicle. A registration lookup cannot identify which radio is currently fitted, especially on older cars where units are often swapped.
