What normally causes it?
- Simple mileage — most bearings are good for well over 100,000 miles but not forever

- Water ingress past a failed seal, especially after deep floods
- An ABS sensor built into the bearing failing at the same time on modern hubs
What a mechanic would check
Wheel off the ground, hands at twelve and six, then three and nine — top-and-bottom play points at the bearing, side-to-side usually at a track rod end. Then I spin it and listen. On the road, a bearing hum that changes when you swerve gently left and right tells you which side it is: load the bad side and the noise gets louder.
What might need replacing
- A wheel bearing or a complete hub assembly
- An ABS sensor if it's integrated
- A hub nut, which is normally single-use
Can you still drive it?
A grumbling bearing caught early is drivable while you book it in. Detectable play is different — bearings that let go can take the wheel with them, so don't leave it.
