Enter any UK registration for an instant, free DVSA MOT check — status, expiry date, days remaining, mileage, advisories and past failures.

What a free MOT check tells you

Type any UK registration into the box above and the check pulls the official DVSA record for that vehicle in about two seconds. You get the current MOT status, the exact expiry date, how many days are left, the recorded mileage at each test, and the full pass and fail history going back through the vehicle's life.

It also lists every advisory a tester has written. Advisories are the warnings that did not fail the car but were heading that way — a tyre near the limit, a corroded brake pipe, a slight play in a suspension joint. Read in order, they tell you exactly what the car is going to need next and roughly when.

How to read the MOT history like a mechanic

Start with the mileage column. Steady, sensible yearly mileage is a good sign; a year where the reading jumps or drops needs explaining before you buy anything.

Then look for repeat advisories. The same advisory appearing three years running means somebody has been ignoring it, and ignored corrosion or worn suspension is always more expensive by the time it finally fails.

Finally check the failure reasons. A car that fails on bulbs and wiper blades has an owner who does not check things. A car that fails on brake pipes, subframe corrosion or emissions has a problem the next owner inherits.

When your MOT is due and what happens if you miss it

A car needs its first MOT three years from the date of first registration, then every twelve months after that. You can present it up to one calendar month minus a day before expiry and keep the same renewal date, which is the sensible way to do it.

Driving without a valid MOT risks a fine of up to £1,000, and your insurance can be treated as invalid. The only legal exceptions are driving to a pre-booked MOT test or to a garage for repairs arranged to fix a failure.

Frequently asked questions

Is this MOT check really free?

Yes. The check uses the official DVSA MOT history service and costs nothing, with no sign-up and no card details.

How far back does the MOT history go?

The DVSA record generally covers tests from 2005 onwards, so most cars show their full test history including mileage, failures and advisories.

Can I check a car before I buy it?

That is the best use of it. Enter the seller's registration before you view the car and you will see the mileage pattern, past failures and outstanding advisories before you hand any money over.

What does an advisory mean on an MOT?

An advisory is an item the tester found worn or deteriorating but not yet bad enough to fail. It is a warning that the part will need attention, usually within the next twelve months.

How much does an MOT cost at Bob's?

£54.85 at our Birnam workshop near Dunkeld, Perthshire. Call 01350 727 276 to book.
