DPF efficiency below threshold on Renault — K9K dCi DPF clogged with belt-in-oil debris (newer engines) and Megane regen failure.
Renault P2002 — DPF efficiency below threshold on Renault — K9K dCi DPF clogged with belt-in-oil debris (newer engines) and Megane regen failure. Typical UK independent garage cost: £180–£1600.
What actually causes P2002 on a Renault
Renault dCi P2002 has an added complication on K9K belt-in-oil engines — debris contaminates the DPF beyond normal soot. Always inspect belt condition alongside.
Renault engines that log P2002
- 1.5 dCi K9K (Megane/Captur)
- 1.6 dCi R9M (Megane/Kadjar)
How we diagnose P2002 on a Renault
- Belt-in-oil inspection
- DPF soot/ash read
- Forced regen via Clip
- DPF clean or replace
The common misdiagnosis to avoid
Don't quote a DPF on K9K belt-in-oil without inspecting the belt — failed belt + new DPF is a £2k mistake.
Renault P2002 repair cost in the UK
Expect £180–£1600 including parts and labour at an independent garage. Main-dealer quotes on Renault are usually higher for the same job, and the spread exists because the cheap cause and the expensive cause throw the same code — pay for the diagnosis before you pay for parts.
Bob's workshop tip
K9K belt-in-oil P2002 — belt first, DPF second. Order matters.
Codes usually seen alongside P2002 on Renault
- P2463
Symptoms drivers report with P2002
- The 'Engine Service Now' message on the dash, often without a limp mode initially.
- Thick black soot deposits around the inside of the tailpipe (it should be clean enough to eat off).
- A heavy smell of diesel fumes inside the cabin when sitting at traffic lights.
- The car seems to perform fine but the 'DPF Full' warning keeps popping up every 50 miles.
- Excessive cooling fan noise because the car is constantly trying (and failing) to start a regeneration.
Repairs that clear P2002
- Read soot and ash loading on live data before spending anything
- Clean or replace the DPF pressure pipes and sensor
- Forced regeneration if soot loading is high but ash is low
- Off-car DPF clean, or replacement if the substrate is damaged

Reading P2002 on a Renault properly
A generic reader will show P2002 and nothing else. What matters is the freeze-frame data stored with it — engine speed, load, coolant temperature and fuel trims at the moment the fault was logged — plus whether any other module on the Renault has logged something at the same time. Codes rarely arrive alone, and the order they were stored in usually points at which one is the cause and which are the consequences.
Clearing P2002 without fixing it
Erasing the code resets the Renault's readiness monitors as well as the light. The fault returns on the next drive cycle if the cause is still there, and in the meantime the incomplete monitors can stop the car passing an emissions check. After a genuine repair, the car is driven until the relevant monitor completes before it is handed back.

If P2002 is showing on your Renault, bring any scan results with you — we will read the live data ourselves, confirm which cause it actually is, and price the repair before any work starts.
