Exhaust camshaft position over-retarded (Bank 1) on BMW — VANOS solenoid is the usual suspect on N20/N52/N55.

BMW P0015 — Exhaust camshaft position over-retarded (Bank 1) on BMW — VANOS solenoid is the usual suspect on N20/N52/N55. Typical UK independent garage cost: £150–£2200.

What actually causes P0015 on a BMW

On the N20 specifically the exhaust VANOS solenoid clogs with oil sludge — extremely common on neglected service histories. On N55 timing chain stretch is the worry: the VANOS can't move into commanded position because the chain has slipped a tooth. Always rule out chain stretch before just swapping solenoids.

BMW engines that log P0015

  • N20 2.0 (F30 320i/328i, F10 528i, F25 X3)
  • N52 3.0 (E90 330i, E60 530i)
  • N55 3.0T (F30 335i, F10 535i)

How we diagnose P0015 on a BMW

  1. Swap inlet and exhaust VANOS solenoids — if the code follows the solenoid, replace it
  2. Read cam-to-crank deviation in ISTA — over 6° = chain wear
  3. Inspect chain guides via the camshaft cover (N20 is a known failure)
  4. Oil condition check — sludged oil starves VANOS

The common misdiagnosis to avoid

On the N20 timing chain guides are a known failure (look up the N20 chain guide TSB). Fitting a £140 VANOS solenoid on a chain-stretched N20 is a band-aid — get the chain checked first.

BMW P0015 repair cost in the UK

Expect £150–£2200 including parts and labour at an independent garage. Main-dealer quotes on BMW are usually higher for the same job, and the spread exists because the cheap cause and the expensive cause throw the same code — pay for the diagnosis before you pay for parts.

Bob's workshop tip

Always use BMW LL-01 (or correct LL spec) oil at 10,000 mile (16,000km) intervals max on these engines — extended-life service intervals are a known cause of premature VANOS and chain failures.
