Exhaust cam timing too retarded on bank 1.
P0015 — also written POO15, P 0015, 0015 — is the OBD-II code for exhaust camshaft over-retarded (bank 1). Same code, same fix: this page covers every spelling of it.
This code means your exhaust camshaft isn't rotating back to its 'home' position fast enough, usually because of dirty oil or a tired actuator. We see this most often on BMWs and MINIs where the long-life service intervals have done more harm than good.
P0015 is a engine fault code, typically costing £100–£900 to put right in a UK garage.
What P0015 actually feels like to drive
- Engine feels 'flat' and sluggish when trying to overtake on the A9.
- A distinct 'rattle' or 'clatter' from the top of the engine during a cold start.
- Lumpy, hunting idle that feels like it's about to stall at the traffic lights.
- Noticeable drop in MPG—suddenly getting 5-8 miles less per gallon.
- The car 'kangaroos' slightly when you're crawling in slow, city traffic.
What causes P0015?
- Solenoid sticking
- Oil flow problem
- Phaser wear

- BMW 3 Series (E90) 318i/320i 2005-2012
- MINI Cooper (R56) 1.6 Petrol (N12 engine) 2006-2013
- Vauxhall Insignia 1.8 VVT (A18XER) 2008-2017
- Peugeot 207/308 1.6 VTi (EP6 engine) 2007-2015
- Volvo V40 2.0 T4/T5 (B4204) 2012-2018
- Ford Focus 1.6 Ti-VCT 2011-2018
How P0015 is fixed
- Replace solenoid
- Oil change
- Phaser inspection
The P0015 misdiagnosis that wastes money
I see it every week: a customer arrives with a brand-new Bosch solenoid they’ve just fitted, but the light's still on. They’ve fallen for the 'parts cannon' trap. In my experience, especially on the BMW N42 or N46 engines, P0015 is rarely just a dead solenoid. It’s usually thick, black sludge from skipped oil changes blocking the tiny oil gauze filters, or the actual Vanos phaser unit has physically failed internally. Don’t just swap the sensor; check the oil quality first.
What a UK garage should charge for P0015
An initial diagnostic scan and oil pressure check usually runs £60–£90. If it’s just a solenoid, you're looking at £120–£180 fitted using a quality Pierburg or Delphi part. However, if the cam phasers (pulleys) are shot, the price jumps significantly because the timing belt or chain has to come off. On a Vauxhall VVT, that’s about £450-£600. On a BMW with a worn Vanos unit, you could be staring at £800+ once parts and labour are tallied up.
P0015 repair cost in the UK
Most P0015 repairs land between £100–£900 including parts and labour. The spread is wide because the cheap fix (a sensor, a hose, a leak) and the expensive fix (a major component) throw the same code — which is why a proper diagnosis before parts are bought saves the most money.
Bob's tip on P0015
If a garage tells you that you need a new engine, get a second opinion. Ask them to perform a 'Vanos oil pressure test' or a manual solenoid activation via their diagnostic tool (like a Snap-On or Autel). If the solenoid clicks but the timing doesn't advance, it's a mechanical oil flow issue. Also, insist they check the 'o-rings' on the end of the oil filter housing cap—if those are missing or perished, you lose the oil pressure needed to move the camshafts, and you'll get P0015 even if everything else is perfect.
