A VW Transporter radio asks for its security code after the head unit loses its permanent live feed — a flat battery, a battery change, a jump start or the radio being unplugged. The code is held against the serial number of that head unit, not against the registration or VIN. Fitted units: Gamma, RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310, Composition. How to find the serial number:
Look for the code card in the service book, though on ex-fleet vans it is usually gone.
Try presets 1 and 6 held with the ignition on for an on-screen serial.
Otherwise extract the unit with U-shaped VW radio keys.
Record the VWZ serial and part number from the label.
How to key the code in:
Hold preset 1 to enter code mode.
Set the digits on presets 1 to 4.
Hold preset 5 to submit.
Worth knowing:
T4 (1990–2003): Gamma and Beta units, serial on the casing label.
T5 (2003–2015): RCD 210, RCD 310 and RNS 310 are the common units.
T6 (2015 on): Composition Colour and Media — later units are coded to the vehicle.
