A VW Transporter radio asks for its security code after the head unit loses its permanent live feed — a flat battery, a battery change, a jump start or the radio being unplugged. The code is held against the serial number of that head unit, not against the registration or VIN. Fitted units: Gamma, RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310, Composition. Look for the code card in the service book, though on ex-fleet vans it is usually gone. Once you have the serial, enter it in the radio code finder on this page.

Radio codes belong to the head unit serial number, not the vehicle registration or VIN.

A flat battery, battery replacement or radio removal is what triggers the code prompt.

Covers VW Transporter 1990 to present (T4, T5, T6).

Bob's never displays a guessed or generated code — if a working code can't be retrieved you get a full refund.

1990 to present (T4, T5, T6). Gamma, RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310, Composition

How to find the serial number:

Look for the code card in the service book, though on ex-fleet vans it is usually gone.

Try presets 1 and 6 held with the ignition on for an on-screen serial.

Otherwise extract the unit with U-shaped VW radio keys.

Record the VWZ serial and part number from the label.

How to key the code in:

Hold preset 1 to enter code mode.

Set the digits on presets 1 to 4.

Hold preset 5 to submit.

Worth knowing:

T4 (1990–2003): Gamma and Beta units, serial on the casing label.

T5 (2003–2015): RCD 210, RCD 310 and RNS 310 are the common units.

T6 (2015 on): Composition Colour and Media — later units are coded to the vehicle.

Camper conversions add a second complication: a failing leisure battery setup can drop the starter battery and trigger the lock repeatedly.

My camper keeps asking for the radio code That points at the starter battery dropping out — often a leisure-battery split-charge fault or a parasitic drain. Fixing the electrics stops the lock recurring.

Can I use a code from another T5? No. Every code is unique to its own head unit serial.

Is the T6 touchscreen coded? Later Composition and Discover units are tied to the vehicle rather than protected with a four-digit audio code.
