A Volkswagen Golf radio asks for its security code after the head unit loses its permanent live feed — a flat battery, a battery change, a jump start or the radio being unplugged. The code is held against the serial number of that head unit, not against the registration or VIN. Fitted units: Gamma, RCD 210, RCD 310, RCD 330, RNS 310/510. Check the service book wallet and the spare-key sleeve for the original VW code card. Once you have the serial, enter it in the radio code finder on this page.
Radio codes belong to the head unit serial number, not the vehicle registration or VIN.
A flat battery, battery replacement or radio removal is what triggers the code prompt.
Covers Volkswagen Golf 1997 to present (Mk4 to Mk8).
Bob's never displays a guessed or generated code — if a working code can't be retrieved you get a full refund.
1997 to present (Mk4 to Mk8). Gamma, RCD 210, RCD 310, RCD 330, RNS 310/510
How to find the serial number:
Check the service book wallet and the spare-key sleeve for the original VW code card.
With the ignition on, try holding presets 1 and 6 for a serial display.
Otherwise use a pair of U-shaped VW radio keys in the side slots until they click.
Read the VWZ serial and the part number from the label on top of the unit.
How to key the code in:
Hold preset 1 to start code entry.
Presets 1 to 4 set the four digits.
Hold preset 5 or press SCAN to submit.
Worth knowing:
Mk4 (1997–2004): Gamma and Beta cassette or CD units. Label on the casing carries the VWZ serial.
Mk5/Mk6 (2004–2012): RCD 210, RCD 310 and RNS 310. Some builds show the serial with presets 1 and 6 held.
Mk7 (2012–2019): RCD 330 and Composition Media. Retrofitted units often hit component protection rather than a code prompt.
Mk8: touchscreen systems are vehicle-coded and do not use a four-digit audio code.
My Golf says SAFE with a number after it That is the lockout countdown. Keep the ignition on and let it run to zero before entering the code again.
Golf Mk7 says component protection — is that a radio code? No. Component protection is a vehicle-level lock on retrofitted RCD 330 units and needs diagnostic coding to the car.
Where is the VW code card kept? Most often in the service book wallet or with the spare key. It shows the code alongside the VWZ serial so you can confirm it matches the fitted unit.
