Hybrids run the engine for four main reasons even when the battery has charge: cabin heat in winter, engine oil circulation, catalyst warm-up to keep emissions legal, and battery temperature management. It's normal — not a fault.

New hybrid owners often think the petrol engine is running too much. Here's why it's usually doing exactly what it should.

Cabin heat in winter

Most non-PHEV hybrids use engine waste heat to warm the cabin. Switch the heating on below 10°C and the engine will run regularly even if the battery is full. PHEVs with heat pumps avoid this.

Catalyst warm-up

The catalytic converter has to hit 400°C to clean exhaust gases legally. From cold the engine runs for 2–5 minutes solid, then cycles to keep the cat hot — even on a flat road.

Engine oil circulation

Toyota, Honda and Lexus hybrids run the engine briefly every few weeks to circulate oil and stop seals drying out. Normal.

When to actually worry

Engine running constantly above 30mph with a flat hybrid battery and a warning light = fault. EV mode never working at all on a full battery = fault. Otherwise — leave it alone.

Should the engine run in EV mode? — It can — for the reasons above. If the dash actively says EV MODE and the engine still runs, that's a fault.

Is short-trip use bad for a hybrid? — Worse than for a pure EV — short trips don't let the catalyst stabilise. Try to take it on a 30-minute run once a week.

Safe to keep driving?

Treat anything affecting brakes, steering, tyres, seat belts or visibility as stop-now, no matter how well the car appears to be driving. Overheating and low oil pressure are also stop-now: the damage curve on both is measured in minutes, not miles. Most other faults will let you drive gently to a garage, but if the car is in limp mode, losing fluid, or the fault changes how it steers or stops, get it recovered instead. Recovery is cheaper than a tow plus a new engine.

Start with the cheap, common and visible: fluid levels and their condition, tyre pressures and wear pattern, battery voltage and terminal condition, and every connector and vacuum pipe in the area of the fault. A surprising share of electrical gremlins are a corroded earth or a chafed loom, and a surprising share of running faults are an air leak downstream of the sensor doing the complaining. Only after that does anything get unbolted.
