How long do tyres last in the UK?

In the UK, normal tyres last 25,000–40,000 miles. Performance tyres 15,000–25,000. Long-life touring tyres 35,000–50,000+. By UK law you must replace at 1.6 mm tread, but most mechanics recommend 3 mm — handling and wet braking drop sharply below that. Tyres also age: replace any tyre over 6 years old regardless of tread.

Tyre wear is dominated by driving style, alignment and inflation pressure. Here's what to expect.

Should I always replace all four tyres? — No — replace in pairs (axle pairs) at minimum. New on the rear is recommended for stability.

How do I check tyre tread? — 20p coin trick — insert in groove, if you can see the outer band of the coin the tread is below 3 mm.
