Why the Volkswagen tyre pressure light is on
VW's indirect TPMS watches the ABS sensors for one wheel rotating faster than the others (a flat tyre is smaller in diameter so rotates more times per mile). It triggers on a 25% pressure drop, but in cold weather all four can drop together — you'll still see the light because the system was 'set' against the warmer baseline.
Volkswagen tyre pressure light reset — step by step
- Inflate all four tyres cold to the values on the inside of the fuel filler flap or driver's door pillar.
- Switch ignition ON (engine off).
- On Golf Mk7/Mk8, Polo Mk6, Passat B8, T-Roc, T-Cross, Tiguan Mk2: Menu → Vehicle → Tyre Pressure Monitoring → SET (or 'Confirm Tyre Pressure').
- On older models with a physical SET button (Golf Mk6, Polo 6R, Passat B7): press and hold the SET button on the dash or centre console for about 3 seconds — a beep confirms.
- The light should go out immediately. If not, drive for a few minutes and it will clear.

If the light won't go off
If the light won't clear after a SET, you almost certainly have a slow leak — VW's system is genuinely accurate. Check the valves first (a £2 valve core is the most common fix), then look for tyre damage. If pressures are spot-on and the light stays on, on the rare direct-TPMS VWs (Touareg, some Phaeton) a sensor has failed.

Reset is free and DIY. If you do need direct TPMS sensors (Touareg etc.): £45–£90 per sensor fitted. The indirect system has no sensors to fail — it uses the ABS sensors that are already there.
Bob's workshop tip
Always do the SET when tyres are cold (parked overnight). Set them warm after a motorway run and you'll get the light back tomorrow morning when they've cooled and lost 3–4 PSI.
