Why the BMW tyre pressure light is on
BMWs use proper wheel-mounted pressure sensors (RDC — Reifendruckkontrolle). When the warning comes up it's either a real pressure loss, a sensor with a dying battery (typical lifespan 5–7 years, so very common on 2017-and-older cars), or you've just had tyres changed and the system needs a relearn.
BMW tyre pressure light reset — step by step
- Inflate all four tyres cold to the placard pressures (inside driver's door pillar).
- Start the engine — RDC needs the car running for the reset.
- On iDrive cars (F-series and newer): iDrive → CAR / Vehicle Info → Vehicle Status → Tyre Pressure → Perform Reset (or 'Reset').
- Confirm the reset — the system will say 'Reset in progress'.
- Drive away normally. After about 5–10 minutes of driving over 15mph, the message will change to 'TPM status: active'.
- On older E-series without iDrive (E90, E60, E70): press and hold the RDC button (next to the hazard switch) for about 5 seconds until the indicator light flashes.

If the light won't go off
If the warning says 'TPM Malfunction' or 'TPM Sensor Failure' (rather than just 'Low Tyre Pressure'), one of the four sensors is dead or has lost contact. A BMW-specific scan tool will tell you which wheel. New sensor + valve service kit + balance is the fix — refusing to do it means MOT advisory and the warning will never clear.

If your BMW is 2018 or older and has had new tyres on the original sensors more than once, just budget for a new set of sensors at the next tyre change. Replacing 4 in one visit (while tyres are off anyway) is a third of the price of doing them one at a time as they fail.
