Class 4 MOT testing for cars. Book your MOT online — we'll text you a reminder when it's due.

When to get an MOT

The MOT test checks that your vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards. You must get an MOT for your vehicle by either the third anniversary of its registration, or the anniversary of its last MOT if it's over 3 years old. You can be fined up to £1,000 for driving a vehicle without a valid MOT.

The earliest date you can get an MOT

An MOT lasts for a year. The date it runs out is printed on the last pass certificate. You can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date. For example, if your MOT runs out on 15 May, the earliest you can get an MOT to keep the same renewal date is 16 April.

If the MOT has run out

You can't drive your vehicle on the road if the MOT has run out. You can be prosecuted if caught. The only exceptions are to drive it to or from somewhere to be repaired, or to a pre-arranged MOT test. We MOT for all local areas: Birnam, Luncarty, Dunkeld, Pitlochry, Blair Atholl, Aberfeldy, Blairgowrie, Bankfoot.

What We Check During Your MOT

Our DVSA-approved testers examine over 70 items during a Class 4 MOT. These include brakes, suspension, steering, lights and signalling equipment, tyres and wheels, seatbelts, exhaust emissions, windscreen and wipers, mirrors, fuel system integrity, and body condition. Any dangerous or major defects result in a fail, while minor defects and advisories are noted on your certificate for future reference.

What's included

  • DVSA-approved Class 4 testing station
  • Over 70 checks covering safety and emissions
  • Free re-test within 10 working days if needed
  • Advisory items explained clearly, no jargon

What to expect

When you arrive for your MOT, simply drop off your car and keys at reception. Our DVSA-approved tester will carry out the full inspection, which usually takes 45 minutes to an hour. We'll call you once the test is complete to let you know the result. If it's a pass, you're good to go. If there are any failures or advisories, we'll walk you through each item in plain English — no pressure, no jargon. Most minor repairs can be completed the same day.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an MOT cost at Bob's Mechanical Repairs?

Our Class 4 MOT is priced at £54.85, which is the DVSA maximum fee. We never add hidden charges. If your vehicle needs work to pass, we'll always give you a clear quote before carrying out any repairs.

Can I wait while my MOT is done?

We prefer cars to be dropped off in the morning as we're a busy workshop. However, if you need to wait, we can sometimes accommodate same-day testing by arrangement. Please request a quote in advance to discuss.

What happens if my car fails its MOT?

If your car fails, we'll explain exactly what needs fixing and provide a quote for the repairs. Once the work is completed, we re-test the vehicle free of charge within 10 working days. You won't be pressured into having work done — we give you the information and let you decide.

Do you offer a free pre-MOT check?

Yes. We offer a complimentary visual check when you book your MOT with us. This covers the most common failure points — lights, tyres, wipers and fluid levels — so minor issues can be sorted before the test, saving you the hassle of a fail and re-test.
