What is the Engine Control Unit (ECU)?
All modern cars and vans on the road today have an Engine Control Unit (ECU). The ECU can almost be described as the vehicle's 'brain' and contains a processor that takes information from various sensors throughout the engine. It analyses information such as the engine temperature, accelerator pedal angle, oxygen content in the burnt exhaust gases, as well as many more parameters. Using the information from these sensors it can then add the right quantity of fuel at the right time to provide a good mix of fuel economy, performance and emission control.
What is ECU Remapping?
When a manufacturer develops a new car, they have to take into consideration all of the conditions it may be subjected to in all the regions of the world in which they intend to sell the model. This means that instead of optimising the ECU's program, or 'map', to deliver the best performance or fuel-efficiency, they have to make compromises. An ECU remap takes a reading from the ECU's processing chip and adjusts various parameters including fuel pressure, boost pressure, ignition advance and throttle pedal control to release the true performance from the engine.
OBD Remapping
Remapping through the OBD port is the most efficient and non-intrusive tuning method. It allows us to yield some truly amazing results without even opening the bonnet. Connecting our remapping equipment to the OBD port on a vehicle allows us to connect directly to the ECU and the map located inside.
BDM Tuning
Remapping a vehicle through its OBD port is not always possible. Back Door Module (BDM) tuning is the process of connecting directly to the circuit board of an ECU, using a specially engineered jig. This method requires the ECU to be removed from the vehicle and tuned in a clean, safe and static-free environment.

What to expect
When you bring your vehicle in for a remap, we start with a full diagnostic health check to ensure the engine is in good condition. We then take a reading of the existing map and create a custom calibration tailored to your vehicle and driving style. After the remap is applied, we carry out a road test and final diagnostics to confirm everything is performing as expected. The whole process is typically completed within half a day.

Will remapping void my vehicle warranty?
A remap may affect your manufacturer warranty if the dealer detects altered software. However, once the warranty period has ended, remapping is entirely risk-free. We always discuss warranty implications before proceeding so you can make an informed decision.
How long does an ECU remap take?
A standard OBD remap typically takes between one and two hours. BDM tuning, which involves physically accessing the ECU circuit board, can take three to four hours depending on the vehicle. We'll confirm timescales when you book.
Can a remap be reversed?
Yes. We always keep a copy of your vehicle's original map file. If you ever want to revert to factory settings — for example, before a dealer service — we can restore the original calibration quickly and easily.
Which vehicles benefit most from remapping?
Turbocharged diesel engines see the most dramatic gains, often 25–35% more torque and noticeable fuel savings. Turbocharged petrol engines also respond well. Naturally aspirated engines see smaller but still worthwhile improvements in throttle response and drivability.
