Lothian is the most expensive corner of the country for a test — dealer prices in and around Edinburgh run right up to the ceiling and independents sit near £52. City mileage means city faults: worn front discs and pads from stop-start traffic, tyre sidewall damage from kerbing, and emissions failures on diesels that never get a proper run. If your car does short hops only, take it a decent run on a dual carriageway before the test — a hot exhaust gives the emissions check a far better chance.
The spread of MOT prices in Edinburgh confuses people, so here's the plain version. DVSA caps a Class 4 test at £54.85. Below that it's a free market. Discount tests exist to fill ramps and generate repair work, and a busy chain tester working to a clock has every incentive to write the advisory list long. There's nothing dishonest about a cheap test — just go in knowing why it's cheap and be ready to get a second opinion on anything expensive that comes back with it.
Everything on the test is defined in the DVSA inspection manual, and it is public — anybody can read it. Broad strokes: lighting, steering and suspension, brakes, tyres and wheels, seatbelts, body and structure, exhaust and emissions, view of the road, and vehicle identification. Since 2018 defects are graded dangerous, major or minor. Dangerous means don't drive it away. Major means it fails. Minor means it's noted and you've been warned.
