Why a proper wallbox beats a three-pin plug
A 7kW wallbox charges a typical EV overnight; a three-pin granny lead takes two to three times as long and runs a domestic socket at near its limit for hours at a time. Household sockets and their wiring were never designed for that duty cycle, which is why long-term granny-lead charging is a genuine fire risk on older circuits.
A wallbox also communicates with the car, supports scheduled off-peak charging and includes the earth and fault protection an EV installation requires.
What the installation involves
A qualified installer checks the incoming supply and consumer unit, runs a dedicated protected circuit, fits the unit and earth protection, tests and certifies it, and notifies the network operator. On some properties the main fuse or consumer unit needs upgrading first, which is the usual reason one quote is higher than another.
Cable run length, whether the route is surface or buried, and where the unit sits relative to the parking space all affect the price. Get the installer to walk the route before quoting.
Getting the charging cost right
The hardware is only half the saving. An EV tariff with a cheap overnight window is what makes home charging dramatically cheaper than public rapid charging, and a smart wallbox that schedules itself into that window is doing the real work.
If you also have solar, choose a unit that can charge from surplus generation. It is a specification decision, not something that can be added easily afterwards.
