Airport parking is one of the few travel costs where doing nothing is guaranteed to be the expensive option. Drive up on the day and you pay the gate rate, which at most UK airports is two to three times the pre-booked price for the same space. Prices move with demand, so put your actual dates in, compare on-airport long stay against off-airport park and ride, and check the transfer time before you decide.
The five types of airport parking
On-airport short stay is cheapest for a few hours and brutal for a week. On-airport long stay is mid price with a shuttle bus. Off-airport park and ride is usually cheapest for a week or more. Meet and greet costs more but saves the most time. Park, stay and fly bundles a hotel with parking for very early flights.
Rule of thumb: under 24 hours use the official short stay; two to seven days compare official long stay against off-airport; over a week off-airport park and ride almost always wins. Meet and greet is a time purchase, not a money one, and for a 6am flight with children it is often worth the difference.
How to compare properly, not just on headline price
Check the total price rather than a daily rate, the transfer time and how often the shuttle runs, Park Mark accreditation, cancellation and amendment terms, whether the car park retains your keys and shunts the car, and any height restriction if you run a roof box, van or high-roof MPV.
Before you leave the car: a mechanic's checklist
Two weeks standing outside in a UK car park is harder on a car than people expect. Get the battery tested before you fly if it is four years old or has been slow to crank, because trackers, alarms and telematics boxes keep draining while you are away. Leave nothing plugged into the 12V socket, including dash cams in parking mode.
Set tyre pressures including the spare, top up the screenwash, make sure the boot and doors are properly latched so no interior light is left on, and where the ground is level and the car park allows it leave the car in gear or in Park with the handbrake off, as a damp UK winter can bind a rear disc handbrake on over a fortnight. Photograph all four corners and the mileage before you hand over keys or walk away.

Your own comprehensive policy normally covers the car while parked, but not the operator driving it in meet and greet unless they carry their own trade cover. Ask the operator to confirm their insurance and keep the booking confirmation.
Will my car battery go flat while I am away?
