1080p was fine in 2018 — today it's not enough to read a number plate on the motorway at dusk. A proper 4K dash cam captures the plate, the lane, the indicator, the lot. After fitting and wiring more of these than we can count, here's what holds up in Scottish winter light, dark country lanes and the inevitable parked-car-shunt at 3 am.
4K (3840×2160) captures roughly four times the detail of 1080p. On a clear day the difference is subtle; in poor light or at distance it's the difference between a readable plate and a smear of grey pixels. If your driving is all city centre 30 mph, a sharp 1440p cam will do. Motorway commuters, rural drivers and anyone parked on a public street overnight — go 4K.
A rear cam doubles your insurance evidence — most rear-end shunts are 'they hit me from behind, but they claim I brake-checked them.' A cabin cam is useful for taxi/Uber drivers and lone-worker vans. For private cars, front + rear is the sweet spot.
True 24/7 parking mode requires hardwiring to a permanent live, with a voltage cutoff so the cam doesn't flatten your battery. Done properly it captures every door-ding, hit-and-run and break-in attempt. Done with a cheap cigarette-socket adapter it does nothing once you switch off.
Some UK insurers offer a 10–15% discount for declaring a dash cam — but only specific approved models. Nextbase, Thinkware and Viofo are on most lists. A no-name Amazon special isn't. Check before you buy if discount is a factor — and keep the receipt for declaration.
Not with a proper hardwire kit — they include a voltage cutoff (typically 12.0V or 11.8V) that shuts the cam off before the battery can't start the car. Cheap installs without a cutoff will flatten a battery in 2–3 days.
Yes — recording your own vehicle on public roads is legal. GDPR rules apply if you publish footage of identifiable people, but private record-and-keep is fine.
Plug-in install (cigarette socket) takes 5 minutes. Hardwire install for parking mode takes about an hour and requires finding a permanent live, ignition live and earth — most local garages will fit one for £60–£100. We do it for £75.
