Injector circuit malfunction Cylinder 3 on VW — common on 1.6/2.0 TDI CR engines, usually a failing piezo injector or harness connector.
Volkswagen P0203 — Injector circuit malfunction Cylinder 3 on VW — common on 1.6/2.0 TDI CR engines, usually a failing piezo injector or harness connector. Typical UK independent garage cost: £220–£850.
What actually causes P0203 on a Volkswagen
VW common-rail diesel injectors (Continental/Siemens piezo type) typically start to fail around 100k–150k miles. Cyl 3 is no more prone than others mechanically, but the injector connector locking tab breaks during routine service work on cyl 3 specifically (it's the awkwardly-positioned one) and the connector then vibrates loose intermittently. PD engines suffer from injector loom-end connector corrosion at the bulkhead pass-through.
Volkswagen engines that log P0203
- 1.6 TDI CR (Golf, Polo, Caddy, Passat)
- 2.0 TDI CR (Golf, Passat, Tiguan, Touran, Caddy)
- 1.9 TDI PD (older Golf, Bora, Passat)
How we diagnose P0203 on a Volkswagen
- VCDS — read injector correction values (block 23 on 2.0 TDI CR); cyl 3 will be the outlier
- Inspect injector connector — broken locking tab is the giveaway
- Measure resistance at connector vs at injector to isolate wiring vs injector
- Carry out injector return-flow test (back-leak test) — leaking injector = mechanical failure
- After replacement, code new injector IMA/ISA value to ECU using VCDS
The common misdiagnosis to avoid
Many VW indies will quote for a set of 4 reconditioned injectors (£600+) when only cyl 3 is faulty — coding a single new injector is straightforward with VCDS and saves the customer 70% of the bill.
Volkswagen P0203 repair cost in the UK
Expect £220–£850 including parts and labour at an independent garage. Main-dealer quotes on Volkswagen are usually higher for the same job, and the spread exists because the cheap cause and the expensive cause throw the same code — pay for the diagnosis before you pay for parts.
Bob's workshop tip
Always order the injector with the matching IMA code printed on its body — and code it in straight away. A non-coded new injector will run rough and may set P0203 again within 24 hours.
Codes usually seen alongside P0203 on Volkswagen
- P0201
- P0202
- P0204
- P1665
Symptoms drivers report with P0203
- Engine drops into limp mode at motorway speeds, then resets after a restart
- Slight knock or 'diesel knock' specifically when cold
- Loss of power above 2,500 RPM only
- Slightly elevated fuel consumption (1–3 MPG drop)
- Code returns within 100 miles of clearing
Repairs that clear P0203
- Injector replacement
