What actually causes P0401 on a Vauxhall

The Vauxhall 1.9 CDTi (Fiat-shared JTD) suffers chronic EGR cooler carbon — same engine in Alfa, Saab and Fiat. On 2.0 CDTi the intake manifold swirl flap actuator motor seizes, the ECU sees the EGR can't hit its target flow because the intake's restricted, and P0401 stores. 1.7 CDTi (Isuzu-derived) actually has a more reliable EGR but the valve gasket leaks at 80k miles and gives the same symptoms.

4. Carbon-clean the intake while access is open
5. Check DPF condition — a near-full DPF will cause repeat P0401 within weeks

The common misdiagnosis to avoid

Don't pay for a new EGR valve until you've inspected the intake manifold — on 2.0 CDTi Insignias the swirl flaps are the real cause 70% of the time, and a new EGR won't fix it.

Reading P0401 on a Vauxhall properly

A generic reader will show P0401 and nothing else. What matters is the freeze-frame data stored with it — engine speed, load, coolant temperature and fuel trims at the moment the fault was logged — plus whether any other module on the Vauxhall has logged something at the same time. Codes rarely arrive alone, and the order they were stored in usually points at which one is the cause and which are the consequences.

Clearing P0401 without fixing it

Erasing the code resets the Vauxhall's readiness monitors as well as the light. The fault returns on the next drive cycle if the cause is still there, and in the meantime the incomplete monitors can stop the car passing an emissions check.
