U0101 — also written UO1O1, U 0101, 0101 — is the OBD-II code for lost communication with transmission control module. Same code, same fix: this page covers every spelling of it.

This code means your car's main computer has lost its 'handshake' with the gearbox brain. It's a common headache on Ford Powershift and Vauxhall automatics where road salt eats the wiring.

U0101 is a electrical fault code, typically costing £90–£1500 to put right in a UK garage.

What U0101 actually feels like to drive

  • Car is stuck in 'Limp Mode' and won't shift past 2nd or 3rd gear.
  • The gear indicator on the dash (P-R-N-D) has gone blank or is flashing a 'dash'.
  • Turn the key and nothing happens—the car won't even crank because it doesn't know it's in Park.
  • 'Transmission Service Required' or 'Gearbox Fault' message on the IDIC.
  • Speedometer drops to zero while you're driving at 60mph on the A9.
  • The car feels like it's slammed into gear with a massive 'thud' when moving from P to D.

What causes U0101?

  • TCM power/ground fault
  • CAN wiring fault
  • Failed TCM

UK vehicles that throw U0101 most often

  • Ford Focus 2.0 TDCi (Powershift) 2011-2017
  • Vauxhall Insignia 2.0 CDTi (A20DTH) 2008-2015
  • Land Rover Discovery 3/4 (ZF 6HP/8HP) 2005-2016
  • Volkswagen Golf Mk6/Mk7 (DSG) 2009-2018
  • Ford Fiesta 1.6 Ti-VCT (DPS6) 2012-2017
  • Vauxhall Astra J 1.6/1.7 CDTi 2009-2015

How U0101 is fixed

  • Test TCM power
  • CAN diagnostic
  • Replace TCM

The U0101 misdiagnosis that wastes money

I see folks throwing new batteries or expensive gear selector assemblies at this daily, hoping for a cheap fix. On the Vauxhall Insignia or Astra J, nine times out of ten, it’s not the TCM itself that’s 'dead', but a corroded wiring loom where it passes over the gearbox casing. The wires rub through the plastic conduit and turn to green powder. People swap the whole gearbox control unit for £800 when a £2 soldering job on the CAN-bus wires would have seen them right.

What a UK garage should charge for U0101

Expect to pay £60-£90 for an initial diagnostic plug-in at an indie, or £150+ at a main dealer. If it’s just a broken wire, you’re looking at £150-£200 in labour. However, if the TCM is fried (common on DSG or Powershift units), a refurbished unit from a specialist like ECU Testing might be £400, while a brand-new Bosch or LuK unit from the dealer can easily top £1,200 plus coding. Always check the fuses first—that's a 50p fix!

U0101 repair cost in the UK

Most U0101 repairs land between £90–£1500 including parts and labour. The spread is wide because the cheap fix (a sensor, a hose, a leak) and the expensive fix (a major component) throw the same code — which is why a proper diagnosis before parts are bought saves the most money.

Bob's tip on U0101

If your garage tells you the 'Transmission Brain' is dead, ask them specifically if they’ve done a 'voltage drop test' on the TCM power and ground pins. If they haven't, they’re guessing with your wallet. On Fords especially, insist they check the main connector for 'green rot' (corrosion). A lot of these units are bolted to the side of the box and get pelted with Scottish road salt all winter—sometimes all it needs is a good clean with contact cleaner and a bit of dielectric grease to get the signals talking again.
