Throttle position doesn't match ECU command.

P2101 — also written P21O1, P 2101, 2101 — is the OBD-II code for electronic throttle motor range/performance. Same code, same fix: this page covers every spelling of it.

This code means the car's 'windpipe' (the throttle butterfly) isn't moving where the computer told it to. It's incredibly common on VW Golfs and Vauxhall Insignias where oily soot gums up the works.

P2101 is a fuel & air fault code, typically costing £60–£700 to put right in a UK garage.

What P2101 actually feels like to drive

  • The car goes into 'Limp Mode' with a 'Service Engine Soon' message on the dash.
  • Dead throttle pedal—you floor it and absolutely nothing happens for three seconds.
  • Surging or 'hunting' idle when sitting at the lights in town.
  • The engine starts, runs for two seconds, then dies immediately.
  • A distinct clicking or tapping noise from under the bonnet when you turn the ignition on.

What causes P2101?

  • Carbon-fouled throttle body (very common)
  • Failed motor
  • Failed TPS

UK vehicles that throw P2101 most often

  • VW Golf Mk6/Mk7 2.0 TDi (CFGB/CRBC) 2009-2017
  • Vauxhall Insignia 2.0 CDTi (A20DTH) 2008-2015
  • Ford Focus 1.6 Ti-VCT 2011-2018
  • Audi A3 1.8/2.0 TFSI 2008-2016
  • Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDi 2013-2019
  • Nissan Qashqai 1.5 dCi (K9K) 2010-2018

How P2101 is fixed

  • Clean throttle body and re-adapt
  • Replace throttle body

The P2101 misdiagnosis that wastes money

I see too many lads jumping straight to replacing the accelerator pedal assembly or the ECU because they think 'Electronic' means the brain is fried. In my experience, 80% of P2101s on VAG or Ford engines are just simple carbon buildup around the butterfly valve. People clear the code, it comes back, and they buy a cheap £40 eBay throttle body that isn't calibrated right, making the car lurch worse than before. Don't throw parts at it until you've actually looked inside the air intake.

What a UK garage should charge for P2101

A simple diagnostic and throttle body clean usually runs you about £60 to £90 at an independent. If the motor's actually burnt out, a Bosch or Magneti Marelli replacement part is typically £150 to £300, plus an hour's labour (£60-£100). If you go to a main dealer, you're looking at £600-plus easily because they’ll only use OEM boxed parts and charge £150 an hour just to plug the scanner in.

P2101 repair cost in the UK

Most P2101 repairs land between £60–£700 including parts and labour. The spread is wide because the cheap fix (a sensor, a hose, a leak) and the expensive fix (a major component) throw the same code — which is why a proper diagnosis before parts are bought saves the most money.

Bob's tip on P2101

If you're taking this to a garage, insist they try a 'Throttle Body Clean and Adaptation' before quoting for a new unit. A genuine Pierburg or Bosch unit can cost a fortune, but a £10 tin of Wurth carb cleaner and a 15-minute software reset often cures it. Also, check the wiring harness near the plug—on the Corsas and Astras, the wires can rub thin and break inside the insulation, giving you a phantom range error that a new throttle body won't fix.

Can you drive with P2101?

Limp mode.

Urgency: high.
