Variable intake runner stuck open.

P2070 — also written P2O7O, P 2070, 2070 — is the OBD-II code for intake manifold tuning valve stuck open. Same code, same fix: this page covers every spelling of it.

Your engine's 'variable breathing' is jammed wide open, usually because the internal flaps are choked with carbon or the plastic linkage has snapped. Most common on older Audi/VW V6 petrols and high-mileage Vauxhalls.

P2070 is a engine fault code, typically costing £150–£600 to put right in a UK garage.

What P2070 actually feels like to drive

  • The car feels 'flat' and gutless at low revs, like the turbo isn't waking up.
  • A noticeable 'ticking' or 'clacking' sound from the top of the engine at idle.
  • The EML (Engine Management Light) is on, but the car drives mostly fine at motorway speeds.
  • Fuel economy has taken a 5-10% dive on your usual commute.
  • Hesitation or a 'flat spot' when you try to overtake or pull out of a junction quickly.

What causes P2070?

  • Failed actuator
  • Carbon buildup

UK vehicles that throw P2070 most often

  • Audi A6 3.2 FSI (2005-2011) - Very common flap failure.
  • Vauxhall Astra J 1.6 VVT (A16XER) 2009-2015.
  • Volkswagen Golf Mk5/Mk6 2.0 FSI.
  • Mercedes-Benz C230 / C280 (M272 Engine) - Famed for broken runner levers.
  • Mazda 6 2.0 / 2.5 Petrol (2008-2012) - Solenoid and flap issues.
  • Ford Mondeo Mk4 2.0 Duratec (2007-2014).

How P2070 is fixed

  • Actuator replacement
  • Carbon clean

The P2070 misdiagnosis that wastes money

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen brand new MAP sensors or throttle bodies fitted by DIYers trying to chase this code. They think 'Intake' means it's an air leak or a sensor fault. In reality, it’s almost always physical muck. On those Audi V6s, people swap the expensive vacuum solenoids only to find the plastic runner arms inside the manifold have snapped or the flaps are so caked in black carbon they can't physically move. You’re throwing sensors at a mechanical traffic jam.

What a UK garage should charge for P2070

A diagnostic plug-in will cost you £50–£90 depending on your local labour rates. If it’s just a vacuum solenoid (usually Pierburg or Bosch), you’re looking at £120–£180 fitted. However, if the manifold is carbon-choked or the internal flaps are broken, a new manifold can run £350–£600. A main dealer will easily quote you over £1,000 for a manifold swap on an Audi or Merc. We often try a carbon clean first for around £150 to see if we can free them up without a teardown.

P2070 repair cost in the UK

Most P2070 repairs land between £150–£600 including parts and labour. The spread is wide because the cheap fix (a sensor, a hose, a leak) and the expensive fix (a major component) throw the same code — which is why a proper diagnosis before parts are bought saves the most money.

Bob's tip on P2070

If you take it to a garage, ask them to perform an 'activations test' with their scan tool before they start stripping parts. You can often hear the actuator clicking or struggling. If your car is a high-mileage diesel or a direct-injection petrol, ask for a 'borescope inspection' of the intake ports. If it’s just carbon buildup, a walnut blast or a proper chemical clean might save you the £400+ cost of a new manifold. Don't let them just clear the code; it’ll be back the second you hit 3,000 RPM.

Can you drive with P2070?

Drivable.

Urgency: low.
