Intake swirl flap stuck open — extremely common on BMW N47, Audi 2.0 TDI, Merc OM646.

P2004 — also written P2OO4, P 2004, 2004 — is the OBD-II code for intake manifold runner control stuck open (bank 1). Same code, same fix: this page covers every spelling of it.

This is your engine's 'lungs' getting bunged up with soot, usually meaning the swirl flaps are stuck open and messing up your air-fuel mix. It's the classic curse of the high-mileage UK diesel commuter.

P2004 is a engine fault code, typically costing £200–£900 to put right in a UK garage.

What P2004 actually feels like to drive

  • Engine feels 'flat' and sluggish at low revs, then suddenly picks up.
  • The dreaded 'Limp Mode' kicks in when you try to overtake on the A9.
  • A noticeable 'hunting' or rough idle when you're sat at the lights.
  • Fuel economy has dropped by 5-10mpg over the last month.
  • Engine Management Light (EML) staring you in the face on the dash.

What causes P2004?

  • Broken swirl flap linkage
  • Carbon-seized runner
  • Failed actuator motor

UK vehicles that throw P2004 most often

  • BMW 320d / 520d (N47 Engine) 2007-2013
  • Audi A4 / A6 2.0 TDI (CRBC/DEUA Engines) 2012-2019
  • Mercedes E220 CDI (OM646 Engine) 2003-2009
  • Vauxhall Insignia 2.0 CDTi (A20DTH) 2008-2015
  • Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi (DW10) 2007-2014
  • Volvo XC60 D5 (D5244T) 2008-2017

How P2004 is fixed

  • Delete or replace swirl flaps
  • Replace actuator
  • Carbon-clean intake

The P2004 misdiagnosis that wastes money

I see folk jumping straight to the actuator motor every single time because it's 'easy' to swap, but nine times out of ten on the Audi 2.0 TDIs or the BMW N47s, the motor is fine—it's just trying to move a rod that's buried in an inch of oily soot. People waste £150 on a Pierburg motor when the real culprit is a snapped plastic ball-joint on the linkage or swirl flaps that are physically jammed shut by carbon buildup. Don't throw parts at it until you've manually tried to move the runner rod with your finger.

What a UK garage should charge for P2004

A basic diagnostic plug-in will run you £50-£80. If it's just a popped linkage rod on a Volvo or Merc, you might get away with £150-£200. However, if the manifold is carbon-choked, a new Bosch or Pierburg unit plus 3-4 hours of labour will land you between £500 and £900. Main dealers will easily quote you north of £1,200 for the same job. If you go for a swirl flap delete, expect to pay about £350 including the software tweak to keep the EML off.

P2004 repair cost in the UK

Most P2004 repairs land between £200–£900 including parts and labour. The spread is wide because the cheap fix (a sensor, a hose, a leak) and the expensive fix (a major component) throw the same code — which is why a proper diagnosis before parts are bought saves the most money.

Bob's tip on P2004

If you’re driving a BMW or an older Mercedes, don’t let a garage just 'clear the code' and send you off. Insist they check the physical integrity of the flaps. On the older BMW engines especially, these flaps can snap and get sucked into the engine—which means a new engine, not just a new manifold. If you're out of warranty, ask about a 'swirl flap delete kit'. It’s a common UK fix that replaces the flimsy flaps with solid bungs. It’ll pass an MOT no problem as long as the EML is off, and it stops the engine from eating itself.

Can you drive with P2004?

Yes but performance suffers.

Urgency: medium.
