Solenoid E fault.

P0770 — also written PO77O, P 0770, 0770 — is the OBD-II code for shift solenoid e malfunction. Same code, same fix: this page covers every spelling of it.

P0770 means the gearbox ECU has spotted a fault with 'Solenoid E', usually leaving you stuck in one gear. We see this most often on older Toyota RAV4s and high-mileage Lexus saloons.

P0770 is a transmission fault code, typically costing £250–£900 to put right in a UK garage.

What P0770 actually feels like to drive

  • The car feels like it's dragging an anchor when trying to pull away from a junction.
  • Sudden 'thump' into gear followed by the 'Check Gearbox' warning on the dash.
  • Transmission gets stuck in 3rd gear (Limp Mode) to protect itself.
  • Engine revs flare up between shifts as if you've dipped a clutch in a manual.
  • Overdrive or 5th gear simply won't engage on the A9, leaving you screaming along at high RPM.

What causes P0770?

  • Failed solenoid
  • Wiring

UK vehicles that throw P0770 most often

  • Toyota RAV4 2.0 VVTi (2000-2005) - Very common on the U140 series boxes.
  • Lexus IS250/GS300 (2005-2012) - Often the A960E transmission.
  • Vauxhall Astra/Zafira (AF40 6-speed auto) - Solenoid body wear.
  • Volvo V70/XC70 (Aisin-Warner TF-80SC) - 2006-2014 models.
  • Mitsubishi L200 (2006-2015) - Often triggered by heavy towing.

How P0770 is fixed

  • Solenoid pack

The P0770 misdiagnosis that wastes money

I've lost count of how many times I've seen customers come in having already spent £150 on a gearbox 'flush' and a new battery because a forum told them low voltage causes P0770. While a weak battery can upset modern ECUs, P0770 usually points to the internal resistance of Solenoid E or a mechanical blockage in the valve body. People throw fresh fluid at it hoping for a miracle, but if the solenoid coil has gone open-circuit, all you've done is waste £80 worth of Dexron VI.

What a UK garage should charge for P0770

A diagnostic plug-in will cost you £50-£80 at an independent like mine, or double that at a main dealer. If it’s just one solenoid on a Toyota, you’re looking at about £250-£350 including parts and fresh ATF. However, on the Aisin boxes found in Volvos and Vauxhalls, we often have to replace the entire valve body, which can easily hit £800-£900. Stick to OE parts or reputable brands like Sonnax—cheap eBay solenoids from China usually fail within a month.

P0770 repair cost in the UK

Most P0770 repairs land between £250–£900 including parts and labour. The spread is wide because the cheap fix (a sensor, a hose, a leak) and the expensive fix (a major component) throw the same code — which is why a proper diagnosis before parts are bought saves the most money.

Bob's tip on P0770

If you’re taking this to a garage, ask them to do a 'pin-out resistance test' at the gearbox loom connector before they even think about dropping the pan. On the Toyota/Lexus units especially, you can verify if the solenoid is dead without getting covered in oil. Also, insist they check for 'swarf' in the pan; if it looks like a glitter factory in there, a new solenoid is just a sticking plaster—you'll need a full recon unit because the internal clutches are disintegrating and clogging the new parts.
