Solenoid D fault.

P0765 — also written PO765, P 0765, 0765 — is the OBD-II code for shift solenoid d malfunction. Same code, same fix: this page covers every spelling of it.

This is a 'computer says no' moment for your gearbox, usually triggered when Solenoid D—which manages gear transitions—goes electrically open-circuit. You'll see this a lot on older Toyota Rav4s and high-mileage Ford Transits.

P0765 is a transmission fault code, typically costing £250–£900 to put right in a UK garage.

What P0765 actually feels like to drive

  • The car feels like it's stuck in 3rd gear (Limp Mode).
  • A massive 'thud' or jolt when moving the selector from Park to Drive.
  • The 'PRNDS' display on the dash is flashing or highlighted.
  • Refusal to shift into top gear on the motorway, keeping revs way too high.
  • Total loss of drive after the car warms up, works fine when stone cold.

What causes P0765?

  • Failed solenoid
  • Wiring

The P0765 misdiagnosis that wastes money

I’ve seen dozens of lads jump straight to swapping out the entire mechatronics unit or gearbox based on this code alone, costing the customer a fortune. Nine times out of ten, they haven't even checked the wiring harness connector for corrosion. On these VAG and Ford boxes, road salt gets into the multi-plug and rots the pins. I’ve also seen people throw 'magic' gearbox additives at it, thinking it’s a sticky valve, when it’s actually a clear-cut electrical failure in the coil of solenoid D itself.

What a UK garage should charge for P0765

An initial diagnostic scan and live data check will set you back £60–£90. If it’s just a single solenoid, you’re looking at £120 for the part (usually Bosch or OEM) plus 3 hours labour and fresh ATF fluid, totalling around £350–£450 at an indie. If you go to a main dealer, they won't just swap a solenoid; they'll insist on a full valve body or mechatronics unit, which will easily north of £1,200 plus VAT.

P0765 repair cost in the UK

Most P0765 repairs land between £250–£900 including parts and labour. The spread is wide because the cheap fix (a sensor, a hose, a leak) and the expensive fix (a major component) throw the same code — which is why a proper diagnosis before parts are bought saves the most money.

Bob's tip on P0765

If a garage tells you the whole gearbox is 'knackered' because of P0765, get a second opinion. Insist on a 'solenoid continuity and resistance test' at the TCM connector. A decent sparky can tell you in 20 minutes if it’s a £50 wiring repair or a £150 solenoid. Also, ask them to check for 'swarf' in the pan. If the oil is clean but the code is there, it’s electrical. If the oil looks like metallic paint, then you’re looking at a full rebuild.
