Oil pressure sensor reading inconsistent.
P0521 — also written PO521, P 0521, 0521 — is the OBD-II code for engine oil pressure sensor. Same code, same fix: this page covers every spelling of it.
P0521 isn't always a death sentence; it's usually just the pressure switch crying wolf or a clogged filter, but on some UK diesels, it's the first sign of a lethal oil pick-up seal failure.
P0521 is a sensors fault code, typically costing £50–£400 to put right in a UK garage.
What P0521 actually feels like to drive
- The 'Red Oil Can' flashes on the dash when the car is idling at traffic lights, but goes off as soon as you rev it.
- The oil light stays on for 3 or 4 seconds after a cold start on a frosty morning.
- A 'Service Vehicle Soon' message on the Vauxhall dash without a limp mode.
- Finding engine oil sitting inside the plastic electrical connector of the sensor itself.
- Odd 'tapping' or 'clattering' from the top of the engine that matches the light flicking on.
What causes P0521?
- Failed sensor
- Low oil
- Worn engine
UK vehicles that throw P0521 most often
- Vauxhall Insignia 2.0 CDTi (A20DTH) 2009-2017 (Famous for the pick-up seal)
- Vauxhall Astra J 1.4 Turbo 2011-2015
- Volkswagen Golf Mk7 1.6/2.0 TDI (EA288 engine) 2013-2019
- Ford Transit Custom 2.0 EcoBlue 2016-Onwards (Wet belt issues)
- Nissan Qashqai 1.5 dCi 2014-2018
- Land Rover Discovery Sport 2.0 Ingenium (2015-2019)
How P0521 is fixed
- Check oil level first
- Sensor replacement
- Oil pressure test
The P0521 misdiagnosis that wastes money
I see it too often—drivers (and some lazy garages) panic and immediately price up a new oil pump or, worse, tell the customer their engine is scrap. They see 'Oil Pressure' and think the worst. In reality, on a high-mileage Vauxhall or VW, it’s most likely the sensor diaphragm has gone porous or the connector is full of oil. I’ve had lads swap out pumps, belts, and tensioners trying to chase this, when a £15 Bosch sensor and a bit of contact cleaner on the plug would have sorted the lot. Check the simple stuff first before you write off the motor.
What a UK garage should charge for P0521
For a basic sensor swap on something like an Astra, you're looking at £40 for a quality Delphi or Bosch sensor and £50 labour. However, if I’m doing a full mechanical pressure test and an oil/filter change (which you should do if the oil is old), you’re looking at £150-£200 at an independent. If it’s an Insignia needing the pick-up pipe seal, that’s a subframe-drop job and you’re looking at £400+. Main dealers will easily double these prices with their £150+ hourly rates.
P0521 repair cost in the UK
Most P0521 repairs land between £50–£400 including parts and labour. The spread is wide because the cheap fix (a sensor, a hose, a leak) and the expensive fix (a major component) throw the same code — which is why a proper diagnosis before parts are bought saves the most money.
Bob's tip on P0521
If you take your car in for this, don't let the garage 'just swap the sensor' and send you on your way. Insist on a mechanical oil pressure test first. We hook up a physical gauge to the oil gallery to see exactly what 'bars' of pressure the engine is making when hot. If the gauge says 2 bar but the dashboard says 0.5, you know it's a sensor/wiring fault. If the gauge is also low, you've got a genuine engine wear issue. It’s a 30-minute test and could save you £150 in useless parts or, conversely, prevent you from blowing your turbo on the M8.
