P0501 — also written PO5O1, P 0501, 0501 — is the OBD-II code for vehicle speed sensor range/performance. Same code, same fix: this page covers every spelling of it.

P0501 tells you the ECU and the gearbox can't agree on how fast you're actually going, usually because a sensor has gone blind or a reluctor ring has rotted off. I see this most often on high-mileage Transits and older Hondas where the UK road salt has eaten the tone wheels.

The P0501 misdiagnosis that wastes money

I've lost count of how many people bring me a car with P0501 and tell me they’ve already swapped the VSS sensor themselves, yet the speedo is still dead or jumping. On modern UK stuff like the Transit Custom or the Focus, people forget that the speed signal often comes via the ABS pump and the individual wheel speed sensors. They'll spend £40 on a cheap sensor for the gearbox, when the actual fault is a cracked reluctor ring on the CV joint that's rusted through or a snapped wire in the wheel arch loom. Never swap the sensor until you've checked if the ABS module is seeing all four wheels turning.

What a UK garage should charge for P0501

A simple VSS sensor swap on something like a Honda usually runs you £80 to £120 depending on parts. We'd charge £50 for the diagnostic hook-up first. However, if it's a cracked reluctor ring on a Vauxhall or Ford, you're looking at a new CV joint or hub assembly, which easily pushes it to £250-£350 with labour. If you go to a main dealer, expect to pay £150 per hour plus a massive markup on the part—easily £500 total. Stick to a good Indy using decent aftermarket brands like Lemförder or Febi to keep the bill under £200 for most jobs.

Before you let a garage quote you for a new sensor or a cluster repair, ask them to 'live data' the individual wheel speed sensors using a proper scan tool. If three wheels show 20mph and one shows 0mph, you don't have a VSS circuit fault; you have a mechanical failure on that one wheel. Also, if you’re driving a Vauxhall, check the passenger side front ABS loom—they tend to rub through on the plastic liner. If you’re paying for a part, insist on Bosch or Delphi; the 'white box' cheap sensors from eBay usually fail within a month and won't have the right resistance.
