Vehicle speed signal missing or inconsistent.

P0500 — also written PO5OO, P 0500, 0500 — is the OBD-II code for vehicle speed sensor. Same code, same fix: this page covers every spelling of it.

This code means the ECU has lost its marbles regarding how fast you're actually travelling. On older gearboxes it's a physical sensor, but on newer UK hatches, it’s usually an ABS-related headache.

P0500 is a sensors fault code, typically costing £80–£500 to put right in a UK garage.

What P0500 actually feels like to drive

  • Speedo needle just sits at zero even when you're doing 60 on the A9.
  • Power steering feels weirdly light or heavy because it doesn't know how fast you're going.
  • The car 'stumbles' or stalls when you're pulling up to a T-junction.
  • Engine management light is on, usually accompanied by the ABS and Traction Control lamps.
  • Cruised control won't engage no matter how many times you prod the button.

What causes P0500?

  • Failed VSS
  • Wiring
  • ABS module fault

UK vehicles that throw P0500 most often

  • Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi (2005-2011) - Very common VSS failure.
  • Vauxhall Corsa D (2006-2014) - Often ABS module related.
  • Renault Clio 1.2/1.5 dCi (2005-2012) - Connector corrosion.
  • Ford Fiesta 1.25 Zetec (2008-2017) - Wiring loom rubs.
  • Nissan Qashqai 1.5 dCi (2007-2013) - Hub reluctor ring failure.
  • Honda Civic 2.2 CDTi (2006-2011) - Sensor head debris.

How P0500 is fixed

  • VSS replacement
  • ABS scan

The P0500 misdiagnosis that wastes money

I’ve seen dozens of lads rush out and buy a cheap £20 VSS from eBay, swap it on the driveway, and then get frustrated when the speedo still isn't moving. On modern UK stuff like the Focus Mk3 or the Vauxhall Insignia, there often isn't a dedicated sensor on the gearbox at all—the speed is calculated by the ABS module via the wheel speed sensors. The real culprit is usually a cracked reluctor ring or a corroded ABS loom behind the wheel arch liners that's turned to salt-water paste.

What a UK garage should charge for P0500

You’re looking at about £60 to £90 for a proper diagnostic plug-in to see which wheel is lying. If it's just a VSS on an old Mondeo, a decent Bosch or Febi part is £30 plus an hour's labour (£100-£120 total). If it’s a reluctor ring on a BMW or Merc, you're looking at £180-£250 because the driveshaft has to come out. Main dealers will easily double these prices, especially if they try to sell you a genuine manufacturer ABS pump for £1,200 plus VAT.

P0500 repair cost in the UK

Most P0500 repairs land between £80–£500 including parts and labour. The spread is wide because the cheap fix (a sensor, a hose, a leak) and the expensive fix (a major component) throw the same code — which is why a proper diagnosis before parts are bought saves the most money.

Bob's tip on P0500

Before you let a garage bill you for a whole new ABS pump or a gearbox sensor, ask them to 'live stream the individual wheel speed data.' If three wheels show 30mph and one shows zero, it’s a sensor or a ring, not the pricey module. If you've got a Ford or a Nissan and the speedo drops to zero but the car keeps driving fine, check the earth points under the battery tray first—I’ve saved customers £400 just by cleaning a bit of rust off a grounding bolt.

Can you drive with P0500?

Drivable but speedo may be inaccurate.

Urgency: medium.
