Fuel level reading too high.
P0463 — also written PO463, P 0463, 0463 — is the OBD-II code for fuel level sensor high. Same code, same fix: this page covers every spelling of it.
Basically, the car thinks you've managed to fit 200 litres of petrol into a 50-litre tank because the sensor's electrical resistance is off the scale. Very common on older Nissans and high-mileage Vauxhalls where the sender arm gets tired.
P0463 is a sensors fault code, typically costing £100–£500 to put right in a UK garage.
What P0463 actually feels like to drive
- The fuel gauge stays pinned on 'Full' even after a 200-mile motorway run.
- Range/Miles-to-Empty display shows '---' or keeps jumping wildly.
- Fuel gauge suddenly drops to stone cold empty and the low fuel light flashes.
- The car starts and runs perfectly, but you're constantly resetting the trip meter to guess your fuel.
- Management light (MIL) is on, which is an automatic MOT fail if it's a newer diesel.
What causes P0463?
- Sender failure
- Wiring short
UK vehicles that throw P0463 most often
- Nissan Qashqai J10 (2007-2013) - Very common sender failure.
- Vauxhall Insignia A (2008-2017) 2.0 CDTi.
- Ford Focus Mk2/Mk3 1.6 Ti-VCT.
- Hyundai Santa Fe (2006-2012) - Dual sensor setups.
- Jaguar XF (X250) - Wiring loom chafing issues.
- Vauxhall Astra J (2009-2015).
How P0463 is fixed

The P0463 misdiagnosis that wastes money
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen some poor soul buy a brand new instrument cluster off eBay because their gauge is stuck on full. They think the needle's jammed, but it hardly ever is. 95% of the time, P0463 is just the resistor track on the fuel sender unit inside the tank wearing thin or snapping. On the some of the French stuff like Peugeots and Citröens, people also waste money on BSI (Body Control Module) resets when all they really had was a corroded wiring connector sitting on top of the fuel tank exposed to road salt.
What a UK garage should charge for P0463
For a basic diagnostic check-over, I usually charge about £50 to £70 to probe the wiring. If it’s just the sender unit (often made by Bosch or VDO), the part is usually £80 to £150 from a factor like Euro Car Parts or GSf. Labour is the big variable; if I can get to it under the seat, it’s an hour’s work (£60-£80). If I have to drain and drop the fuel tank on something like a Freelander 2, you’re looking at £300 plus. Total job usually lands between £180 and £450 at an indie, whereas a main dealer will easily quote you £700+.
P0463 repair cost in the UK
Most P0463 repairs land between £100–£500 including parts and labour. The spread is wide because the cheap fix (a sensor, a hose, a leak) and the expensive fix (a major component) throw the same code — which is why a proper diagnosis before parts are bought saves the most money.
Bob's tip on P0463
If your garage says they need to 'drop the tank' to even look at it, ask them if there’s an inspection hatch under the rear seats first. On a lot of Vauxhalls and Volkswagens, it’s a 10-minute job to get to the sender. If there isn't one, I’ll usually perform a 'sweep test' with my diagnostic kit to see if the gauge moves electronically. If it does, and the wiring's got 5 volts at the plug, you definitely need a sender. Don't let them charge you for 4 hours of labour if they only have to flip a seat bench up and unscrew a plastic ring with a hammer and drift.
