Fuel level sender stuck showing empty.

P0462 — also written PO462, P 0462, 0462 — is the OBD-II code for fuel level sensor low input. Same code, same fix: this page covers every spelling of it.

This code means your car's brain has lost touch with the float in the tank, usually because the sensor's signal voltage has dropped through the floor. It's a classic headache on high-mileage Nissan Qashqais and older Vauxhalls.

P0462 is a sensors fault code, typically costing £250–£700 to put right in a UK garage.

What P0462 actually feels like to drive

  • The fuel gauge sits dead on empty even after a £80 fill-up at Shell.
  • The 'Range' or 'Miles to Empty' display shows just dashes or zero.
  • Low fuel warning light stays on constantly, driving you crackers.
  • The gauge suddenly drops to zero while driving, then bounces back five minutes later.
  • Car won't start if the ECU thinks it's bone dry (common on some modern diesels).

What causes P0462?

  • Failed sender
  • Broken float arm

UK vehicles that throw P0462 most often

  • Nissan Qashqai (J10/J11) 2007-2017
  • Vauxhall Insignia (A20DTH) 2008-2015
  • Jaguar XF (X250) 2.2d/3.0d 2011-2015
  • Ford Transit Custom 2.2 TDCi 2012-2016
  • Land Rover Discovery 3/4 (TDV6) 2004-2016
  • Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2 CRDi 2006-2012

How P0462 is fixed

  • Replace sender assembly

The P0462 misdiagnosis that wastes money

I’ve seen dozens of lads rush to swap the instrument cluster or the fuel pump assembly because they think the gauge is lying. Most of the time, they’re throwing £300 at a pump when the problem is a corroded earth or a snapped wire in the harness loom right above the tank. On the Qashqai especially, people replace the whole sender unit when the actual culprit is sulfur buildup on the sensor tracks from supermarket fuel—sometimes a good cleaner or just cleaning the contacts saves the customer a fortune.

What a UK garage should charge for P0462

A proper diagnostic check will cost you £60 to £90 at an indie. If it’s just a wiring repair, you’re looking at £120. But if the sender unit (often part of the fuel pump) is knackered, parts like Bosch or Pierburg run between £150 and £350. Labour adds another £100 to £250 depending on whether there's an access hatch under the seat or if I have to drop the whole tank. Total bill is usually £300-£500, but a main dealer will easily rinse you for £800.

P0462 repair cost in the UK

Most P0462 repairs land between £250–£700 including parts and labour. The spread is wide because the cheap fix (a sensor, a hose, a leak) and the expensive fix (a major component) throw the same code — which is why a proper diagnosis before parts are bought saves the most money.

Bob's tip on P0462

Before you let a garage pull your back seats out and drop the tank, ask them to do a 'sweep test' with their diagnostic kit. This forces the gauge to move from empty to full. If the needle moves during the test, the dash is fine and it's definitely the sender or wiring. Also, if you’re driving a Nissan or a Jag, insist they check the connector pins for 'terminal tension'—a loose pin in the plug looks fine to the eye but will throw a P0462 every time you hit a pothole.

Can you drive with P0462?

Urgency: low.
