Wastegate solenoid electrical fault.

P0243 — also written PO243, P 0243, 0243 — is the OBD-II code for turbocharger wastegate solenoid 'a'. Same code, same fix: this page covers every spelling of it.

P0243 means the brain of the car has lost touch with the little electrical valve that controls your turbo's boost. It's a massive headache on Vauxhall CDTi and Ford EcoBoost engines across the UK.

P0243 is a engine fault code, typically costing £80–£400 to put right in a UK garage.

What P0243 actually feels like to drive

  • The car feels like a 1.0L N/A instead of a turbo diesel on the A9.
  • Engine 'Limp Home' mode kicks in as soon as you hit 60mph.
  • An annoying 'Service Vehicle Soon' message on the dash (common on Vauxhalls).
  • Turbo flutter or 'pinking' noises when you lift off the throttle.
  • The car pulls fine at low revs but completely dies flat above 3,000 RPM.

What causes P0243?

  • Solenoid failure
  • Wiring damage

UK vehicles that throw P0243 most often

  • Vauxhall Insignia 2.0 CDTi (A20DTH) 2008-2015
  • Ford Focus 1.0 & 1.6 EcoBoost 2011-2018
  • Vauxhall Astra J 1.7 CDTi 2009-2014
  • Volkswagen Golf Mk6 2.0 TDI (CR engines) 2008-2013
  • Ford Transit Custom 2.2 TDCi 2012-2016

How P0243 is fixed

  • Solenoid replacement

The P0243 misdiagnosis that wastes money

I see folks blindly slapping a brand-new hybrid turbo on when they see P0243, assuming the wastegate itself is stuck. Total waste of a grand. In my shop, nine times out of ten, it’s not the turbo at all—it's either a £40 Pierburg solenoid or, more commonly on the Corsas and Astras, the wiring harness has chaffed through against the gearbox or radiator shroud. We also see people trying to 'clean' the solenoid with brake cleaner. Don't bother; if the internal coil is burnt out, no amount of spray will bring it back to life.

What a UK garage should charge for P0243

For a basic diagnostic plug-in, expect to pay £50-£80 at an indie. If it’s just the solenoid, a quality Pierburg unit is usually £45-£90 from a factor like Euro Car Parts or GSF, plus an hour's labour (£60-£100). If you go to a main dealer, they’ll sting you for £150 for the part alone and £150/hr labour. Total job usually sits around £150-£200 at my place, unless we’re hunting down a broken wire deep in the loom, which can push it toward £350.

P0243 repair cost in the UK

Most P0243 repairs land between £80–£400 including parts and labour. The spread is wide because the cheap fix (a sensor, a hose, a leak) and the expensive fix (a major component) throw the same code — which is why a proper diagnosis before parts are bought saves the most money.

Bob's tip on P0243

Before you let a garage quote you for a new turbo, ask them to do a 'continuity and resistance test' on the solenoid circuit and a vacuum pull test. If they just say 'the computer says turbo,' walk away. A proper tech will use a vacuum pump (like a Mityvac) to see if the wastegate actuator actually moves. If the actuator moves freely but the code won't clear, it's 100% electrical. Also, insist on a Pierburg or Bosch replacement part; the unbranded 'eBay specials' usually fail within a month and leave you back at square one.
