Engine RPM exceeded safe limit.

P0219 — also written PO219, P 0219, 0219 — is the OBD-II code for engine overspeed. Same code, same fix: this page covers every spelling of it.

This isn't a glitch; it's the engine screaming for help because it's been spun faster than the redline, usually on manual BMWs or hot hatches. It's the ECU's way of logging that the driver's messed up a gear change.

P0219 is a engine fault code, typically costing £0–£400 to put right in a UK garage.

What P0219 actually feels like to drive

  • The EML light comes on, often immediately after a botched downshift.
  • A sudden 'jerk' or momentary locking of the front wheels while driving.
  • Engine sounds 'tappy' or like a sewing machine (top-end damage).
  • Misfiring at idle that wasn't there ten minutes ago.
  • The car feels down on power, as if it's hit a 'soft' limp mode.

What causes P0219?

  • Mis-shift
  • Throttle body fault
  • Towing/coasting issue

UK vehicles that throw P0219 most often

  • Ford Focus ST/RS 2.5 & 2.0 EcoBoost (2005-2018)
  • BMW 3 Series (E90/F30) Manual 6-speed models
  • Honda Civic Type R (EP3/FN2/FK8) K-Series engines
  • Vauxhall Corsa D/E VXR (A16LES/B16LES)
  • Mini Cooper S (R56/F56) 2007-2020

How P0219 is fixed

  • Inspect throttle body
  • Driver awareness

The P0219 misdiagnosis that wastes money

Folks often run out and buy a new throttle body or a crank position sensor thinking the electronics have gone wonky. In reality, on a manual car, this code is usually 'mechanical overspeed' — what we call a 'money shift.' A driver tries to drop from 5th to 4th but hits 2nd gear instead while doing 60mph. No sensor in the world can stop the wheels from forcing the engine to 8,000 RPM. Always check the freeze frame data for the vehicle speed and gear before blaming the hardware.

What a UK garage should charge for P0219

If it's just a code clear and a 'don't do it again' chat, we usually charge a £50 diagnostic fee. However, if the throttle body is actually sticking (common on older Vivaro vans), a Bosch or Pierburg replacement is £150–£250 plus an hour's labour (£70–£90). If we're talking about a jumped timing chain because of the overspeed, you're looking at £800 to £1,500 depending on how many valves met their maker. Main dealers will easily double these figures.

P0219 repair cost in the UK

Most P0219 repairs land between £0–£400 including parts and labour. The spread is wide because the cheap fix (a sensor, a hose, a leak) and the expensive fix (a major component) throw the same code — which is why a proper diagnosis before parts are bought saves the most money.

Bob's tip on P0219

If this code has popped up on a car you’re looking to buy, walk away or insist on a compression test. I’ve seen Focus STs and Type Rs with this code where the valves have slightly 'kissed' the pistons. It might run fine now, but a bent valve stem will eventually snap. Ask the garage to check for 'over-rev' counters in the ECU history. If you're the one who caused it, tell your mechanic the truth — it’ll save you three hours of diagnostic labour at £80 an hour if we know we’re looking for mechanical timing damage rather than a ghost in the wiring.

Can you drive with P0219?

Drivable.

Urgency: low.
