P0121 — also written PO121, P 0121, 0121 — is the OBD-II code for throttle position sensor range/performance. Same code, same fix: this page covers every spelling of it.

This code means your engine's 'brain' is confused because the accelerator pedal and the throttle flap aren't singing from the same hymn sheet. It's a classic on Vauxhall Astras and older VW Golfs where the butterfly valve gets gummed up with oil mist.

P0121 is a sensors fault code, typically costing £80–£450 to put right in a UK garage.

What P0121 actually feels like to drive

  • The car feels jerky or 'kangaroos' when you're light on the throttle in traffic.
  • It won't go over 30mph because it's kicked itself into 'Limp Home' mode.
  • The idle speed won't settle and keeps hunting up and down like a seesaw.
  • Engine Check Light is on, usually accompanied by 'Service ESP' or 'Traction Control' warnings.
  • Complete lack of response when you bury your foot—the car just decides to ignore you.

What causes P0121?

  • Dirty throttle body
  • Failed TPS
  • Wiring fault

The P0121 misdiagnosis that wastes money

I see so many lads jumping straight to buying a new throttle body off eBay as soon as P0121 pops up. They spend £250 on a part they don't need, only for the light to come back on two days later. Nine times out of ten, it’s just a thick ring of carbon soot around the butterfly valve or a wire that’s chafed through near the connector. Don't go throwing parts at it until you've checked the loom and given the bore a proper scrub with some solvent.

What a UK garage should charge for P0121

For a simple 'clean and reset' using a decent solvent and a Snap-On scanner, expect to pay around £80 to £120 at an indie. If the sensor is actually shot, a genuine Bosch or Pierburg throttle body will set you back £180–£300 plus an hour's fitting. Avoid the £40 'no-name' Chinese units from the internet; they never calibrate right. A main dealer will likely quote you £500+ once they've added their 'diagnostic fee' and VAT.

P0121 repair cost in the UK

Most P0121 repairs land between £80–£450 including parts and labour. The spread is wide because the cheap fix (a sensor, a hose, a leak) and the expensive fix (a major component) throw the same code — which is why a proper diagnosis before parts are bought saves the most money.

Bob's tip on P0121

Before you let a garage sell you a new unit, ask them: "Have you checked the 'Live Data' and performed a throttle body re-learn?" If they look at you blankly, move on. On modern Vauxhalls and VWs, even if you clean the throttle body, the ECU still thinks it's restricted by dirt unless you perform an electronic adaptation. A proper scan tool job shouldn't cost you more than an hour's labour — it's worth every penny to avoid the £400 bill for a new Bosch unit.
