Intake camshaft over-advanced on Mini Cooper S — the Prince N14/N18 VANOS solenoid and stretched timing chain are the usual suspects.

Mini P0011 — Intake camshaft over-advanced on Mini Cooper S — the Prince N14/N18 VANOS solenoid and stretched timing chain are the usual suspects. Typical UK independent garage cost: £220–£1800.

What actually causes P0011 on a Mini

Prince engines (BMW/PSA joint venture) are notorious for timing chain stretch and VANOS solenoid sludging. P0011 here typically means the intake VANOS unit can't hold the commanded angle — either the solenoid screen is clogged with carbon-rich oil, the VANOS actuator bolt has loosened (known TSB), or the chain has stretched enough that the cam timing is permanently retarded relative to the crank. The 3–5 second rattle on cold start is the giveaway.

Mini engines that log P0011

  • N14 1.6 turbo (Cooper S R56 2007–2010)
  • N18 1.6 turbo (Cooper S R56/R57/R58 2010–2014)
  • N12/N16 1.6 (Cooper non-S)

How we diagnose P0011 on a Mini

  1. Listen for the classic 3–5 second cold-start chain rattle — a near-certain sign of chain stretch on N14/N18
  2. Scan tool: check intake cam actual vs commanded angle at idle — >5° error with the engine warm confirms VVT fault
  3. Remove and inspect the intake VANOS solenoid for sludge — clean and retest before condemning
  4. Check oil level and condition — Prince engines hate extended service intervals and dirty oil kills VANOS
  5. If chain rattle present, plan full chain kit + VANOS + guides + tensioner as one job

The common misdiagnosis to avoid

Don't let a non-Mini specialist start the job thinking it's 'just a solenoid' — once the front cover is off and chain wear is confirmed, a half-job will be back within 10,000 miles. Either do the chain, guides, tensioner and VANOS together or walk away.

Mini P0011 repair cost in the UK

Expect £220–£1800 including parts and labour at an independent garage. Main-dealer quotes on Mini are usually higher for the same job, and the spread exists because the cheap cause and the expensive cause throw the same code — pay for the diagnosis before you pay for parts.

Service campaign / TSB note

BMW/Mini issued multiple service measures covering Prince timing chain and VANOS bolt loosening 2007–2014.

Bob's workshop tip

Mini owners who've stuck to 6,000-mile oil changes with proper LL-04 oil rarely see P0011 — those on 18,000-mile 'long-life' intervals see it constantly. First question I ask: when was the last oil change, and what spec went in?

Codes usually seen alongside P0011 on Mini

  • P0014
  • P0016
  • P0341

Symptoms drivers report with P0011

  • Engine rattles like a 'bag of nails' for 3 seconds on a cold start.
  • The car felt fine on the motorway, but now it stalls every time I stop at a roundabout.
  • Noticeable 'flat spot' or hesitation when trying to overtake in 3rd gear.
  • Lumpy, hunting idle that makes the gearstick vibrate.
  • Fuel economy has tanked—getting about 10mpg less than usual.

Repairs that clear P0011

  • Engine flush and oil change
  • Replace VVT solenoid
  • Replace cam phaser if needed
