What actually causes P0087 on a Ford
Ford common-rail diesels log P0087 when actual rail pressure falls below the ECU's commanded value under load — symptom is a sudden loss of power and limp mode, often clearing on restart. On 1.6 TDCi (PSA DV6) it's typically excessive injector back-leak (leaky-off rate too high) or a worn HP pump regulator. On 2.2 TDCi Transits it's frequently a metering valve on the back of the pump.

- Only after the above, pressure-test the HP pump itself
The common misdiagnosis to avoid
Don't let anyone fit a new HP pump (£900+) before a proper leak-off test on the injectors — a single sticky injector returning 3× spec will pull rail pressure flat and mimic a pump fault.

Reading P0087 on a Ford properly
A generic reader will show P0087 and nothing else. What matters is the freeze-frame data stored with it — engine speed, load, coolant temperature and fuel trims at the moment the fault was logged — plus whether any other module on the Ford has logged something at the same time. Codes rarely arrive alone, and the order they were stored in usually points at which one is the cause and which are the consequences.
Clearing P0087 without fixing it
Erasing the code resets the Ford's readiness monitors as well as the light. The fault returns on the next drive cycle if the cause is still there, and in the meantime the incomplete monitors can stop the car passing an emissions check. After a genuine repair, the car is driven until the relevant monitor completes before it is handed back.
