Crankshaft/camshaft correlation fault on Ford — almost always wet-belt failure on 1.0 EcoBoost or stretched chain on 1.6 TDCi.
Ford P0016 — Crankshaft/camshaft correlation fault on Ford — almost always wet-belt failure on 1.0 EcoBoost or stretched chain on 1.6 TDCi. Typical UK independent garage cost: £600–£2800.
What actually causes P0016 on a Ford
Ford's 1.0 EcoBoost uses a 'wet belt' (oil-immersed cambelt). When it ages past 80,000 miles or sees extended service intervals, belt debris breaks off, blocks the oil pickup strainer, and the belt jumps a tooth — P0016 stores, often with a misfire and a ruined oil pump. On 1.6 TDCi (PSA DV6 shared) it's typically a stretched timing chain on the high-pressure fuel pump side. Either way, this is a stop-driving-immediately fault on EcoBoost.
Ford engines that log P0016
- 1.0 EcoBoost (Fiesta, Focus, B-Max, EcoSport, Puma)
- 1.5 EcoBoost (Focus, Kuga)
- 1.6 TDCi DV6 (Focus, Fiesta, C-Max)
- 1.8 TDCi Lynx (older Focus, Mondeo)
How we diagnose P0016 on a Ford
- Stop the car immediately if 1.0 EcoBoost — do not road test
- Pull rocker cover and inspect wet belt for cracking, missing chunks or rubber debris
- Inspect oil pickup strainer for belt debris (sump-off job on EcoBoost)
- Verify cam timing with locking tools before any belt/chain replacement
- On 1.6 TDCi, check timing chain stretch via dealer-level scan tool cam/crank offset reading
The common misdiagnosis to avoid
Don't dismiss P0016 on a 1.0 EcoBoost as a sensor fault — keep driving and you risk valve-to-piston contact and a £4,000+ engine. The minute that code stores, the car needs trailering to a Ford specialist.
Ford P0016 repair cost in the UK
Expect £600–£2800 including parts and labour at an independent garage. Main-dealer quotes on Ford are usually higher for the same job, and the spread exists because the cheap cause and the expensive cause throw the same code — pay for the diagnosis before you pay for parts.
Service campaign / TSB note
Ford issued multiple wet-belt-related service actions on 1.0 EcoBoost 2012–2020.
Bob's workshop tip
If you've bought a used 1.0 EcoBoost without wet-belt history, change it on collection — Ford revised the service interval down to 6 years / 100k miles, then again to 4 years on some markets. A £450 preventative belt is cheap insurance against a £3,500 engine.
Codes usually seen alongside P0016 on Ford
- P0017
- P0300
- P0008
Symptoms drivers report with P0016
- Loud metallic rattle for the first 2–4 seconds of a cold start — the classic 'death rattle'
- Long cranking before the engine catches, especially after standing overnight
- Rough lumpy idle at traffic lights, occasionally stalls
- Stop/Start stops working (ECU disables it once cam correlation drifts)
- Turbo feels lazy or flat below 2,000 RPM — timing is retarded to protect the valvetrain
- MPG drops 4–8 mpg with no other obvious cause
- Code P0011, P0014, P0017 or P0341 stored alongside P0016
Repairs that clear P0016
- Measure cam-to-crank deviation with manufacturer-aware scan tool
- Plan full timing chain kit if stretched
- Replace cam phaser if mechanically faulty

Reading P0016 on a Ford properly
A generic reader will show P0016 and nothing else. What matters is the freeze-frame data stored with it — engine speed, load, coolant temperature and fuel trims at the moment the fault was logged — plus whether any other module on the Ford has logged something at the same time. Codes rarely arrive alone, and the order they were stored in usually points at which one is the cause and which are the consequences.
Clearing P0016 without fixing it
Erasing the code resets the Ford's readiness monitors as well as the light. The fault returns on the next drive cycle if the cause is still there, and in the meantime the incomplete monitors can stop the car passing an emissions check. After a genuine repair, the car is driven until the relevant monitor completes before it is handed back.
Bob's Mechanical Repairs is an independent garage in Birnam, Dunkeld, Perthshire, with 32 years of Bob's experience on the tools. If P0016 is showing on your Ford, bring any scan results with you — we will read the live data ourselves, confirm which cause it actually is, and price the repair before any work starts.
