DPF differential pressure too low on BMW diesel — N47 and N57 specifically have a known pressure-pipe blockage pattern.

BMW P244A — DPF differential pressure too low on BMW diesel — N47 and N57 specifically have a known pressure-pipe blockage pattern. Typical UK independent garage cost: £180–£1800.

What actually causes P244A on a BMW

BMW DPF pressure-tap pipes (small black flexible lines, often with metal sleeves) are notorious for soot and moisture build-up causing P244A. The ECU sees no pressure differential, fails the DPF rationality check, and stores the code. On N47/N57 it's also common to see P244A immediately after a forced regen as the pipes were stretched/cracked during the service. True DPF substrate failure is less common on BMW than on Ford or Vauxhall.

BMW engines that log P244A

  • N47 2.0 diesel (E90 320d, E60 520d, F30 320d)
  • N57 3.0 diesel (E90 330d, F10 530d, X5 30d)
  • B47 (later 2.0d)

How we diagnose P244A on a BMW

  1. INPA/ISTA — read DPF differential pressure at idle and 2,500 rpm; should rise visibly with revs
  2. Remove both pressure-tap pipes and blow through with low-pressure air — clean with brake cleaner if blocked
  3. Inspect the pressure sensor itself — diaphragm fails open with age, replace if pipes are clear and reading still flat
  4. On N47/N57, always check after a forced regen — service damage to pipes is common
  5. Confirm DPF physical integrity by back-pressure test before condemning

The common misdiagnosis to avoid

BMW main dealers will commonly quote complete DPF replacement (£1,600–£2,400) when the actual fault is £25 of pipe and an hour's labour. Always inspect and clean pressure pipes first.

BMW P244A repair cost in the UK

Expect £180–£1800 including parts and labour at an independent garage. Main-dealer quotes on BMW are usually higher for the same job, and the spread exists because the cheap cause and the expensive cause throw the same code — pay for the diagnosis before you pay for parts.

Bob's workshop tip

Always replace BMW pressure-tap pipes as a pair, with genuine parts — pattern hoses split at the bends within months and you'll be back in there.

Codes usually seen alongside P244A on BMW

  • P2002
  • P2463
  • P244B

Symptoms drivers report with P244A

  • Engine Management Light (EML) on, often shortly after a motorway run.
  • Car drops into 'limp mode' with reduced power, making overtakes dodgy.
  • Start-Stop system stops working (standard safety lockout for emissions codes).
  • Noticeable whistling or hissing noise from under the car when accelerating.
  • DPF warning light might flash, but the car doesn't feel like it's actually blocked.

Repairs that clear P244A

  • Replace DPF pressure sensor (cheap first fix)
  • Replace rubber sense pipes
  • Backpressure test before DPF replacement
