EGR flow insufficient on BMW N47/N57 diesels — usually a failed EGR cooler (with a known recall on older N47s) or a clogged intake swirl flap mess.
BMW P0401 — EGR flow insufficient on BMW N47/N57 diesels — usually a failed EGR cooler (with a known recall on older N47s) or a clogged intake swirl flap mess. Typical UK independent garage cost: £220–£950.
What actually causes P0401 on a BMW
BMW issued a recall on N47/N57 EGR coolers (recall 21V-957 in the UK) because they were cracking and leaking coolant into the intake — a known fire risk. Even post-recall, the EGR valve sticks from carbon. On N47 the swirl flaps in the intake manifold also break up and get sucked through the engine, which is a separate £1,800+ catastrophe but can present alongside P0401.
BMW engines that log P0401
- N47 2.0d (E90 320d, F30 320d, F10 520d, X1, X3)
- N57 3.0d (E90 330d, F10 530d, X5, X6)
- M47 2.0d (E46 320d, E60 520d)
How we diagnose P0401 on a BMW
- Check VIN against BMW recall database (UK DVSA + BMW UK) — N47/N57 EGR cooler recall covers many cars
- INPA / ISTA — read EGR position vs commanded, plus coolant temp behaviour
- Pressure-test cooling system — a cracked EGR cooler will leak coolant into the intake (white exhaust, slowly disappearing coolant)
- Remove EGR valve and check for stuck-shut condition
- Inspect intake manifold for swirl flap debris — known N47 killer
The common misdiagnosis to avoid
Don't replace the EGR cooler at full BMW dealer price (£1,400+ fitted) without first checking the recall status against the VIN — many customers don't realise they're eligible for a free replacement.
BMW P0401 repair cost in the UK
Expect £220–£950 including parts and labour at an independent garage. Main-dealer quotes on BMW are usually higher for the same job, and the spread exists because the cheap cause and the expensive cause throw the same code — pay for the diagnosis before you pay for parts.
Service campaign / TSB note
BMW UK EGR cooler recall covers many N47/N57 cars — check VIN with a BMW dealer.
Bob's workshop tip
If you've got an N47 with P0401 and the swirl flaps are still original (pre-2010 cars mostly), this is the perfect moment to fit the BMW delete kit (£90 part) while the manifold is off — saves a return visit when one breaks off later.
Codes usually seen alongside P0401 on BMW
- P0402
- P2453
- P11E3
Symptoms drivers report with P0401
- Engine management light on with no drivability change day-to-day
- Slight power loss and 1–3 mpg drop over the last few thousand miles
- Rough idle when hot, especially after motorway driving followed by traffic
- Occasional puff of black smoke on hard acceleration from cold
- EGR valve rattle / buzz when key is first turned (stepper motor testing itself against carbon)
- MOT emissions test borderline or fails on smoke opacity
- Paired codes: P0402 (EGR excessive flow), P0403 (EGR circuit), P2463 (DPF soot high — blocked EGR overloads DPF), P042E (EGR stuck open)
Repairs that clear P0401
- EGR valve clean or replacement
- Carbon-clean intake manifold
- Replace EGR sensor
- Diesel: check DPF condition
