MAF circuit malfunction on BMW — N47 diesel MAF failures very common, plus N20/N55 petrol HFM sensor degradation.

BMW P0100 — MAF circuit malfunction on BMW — N47 diesel MAF failures very common, plus N20/N55 petrol HFM sensor degradation. Typical UK independent garage cost: £140–£480.

What actually causes P0100 on a BMW

BMW N47 diesel MAF is mounted post-air-filter and gets contaminated by the EGR cooler vapour blow-back — by 100k miles 70% of N47s have a drifted MAF reading triggering P0100. N20 and N55 petrol have less common MAF failures but when they do, present as rough idle and a 10% MPG drop. Always check the air filter housing is properly seated — a poorly clipped airbox is a frequent UK MOT-test cause of P0100.

BMW engines that log P0100

  • N47 2.0d (320d, 520d, X1, X3)
  • N57 3.0d (330d, 530d, X5)
  • N20 2.0 turbo petrol (320i, 528i)
  • N55 3.0 turbo petrol (335i, 535i)

How we diagnose P0100 on a BMW

  1. INPA / ISTA — read MAF kg/h at idle and on snap throttle
  2. Inspect airbox lid clips and intake snorkel for proper seating
  3. Check MAF tip for oil/carbon film
  4. Pressure-test intake from MAF to turbo
  5. Replace MAF and clear adaptations

The common misdiagnosis to avoid

BMW dealers will quote a full intake decarbonisation package (£500+) on N47 with P0100 — for a contaminated MAF, a £140 sensor fitted clears it for most cases without touching the carbon.

BMW P0100 repair cost in the UK

Expect £140–£480 including parts and labour at an independent garage. Main-dealer quotes on BMW are usually higher for the same job, and the spread exists because the cheap cause and the expensive cause throw the same code — pay for the diagnosis before you pay for parts.

Bob's workshop tip

If you've got an N47 with P0100, P0401 and intake carbon all together, do the EGR clean, intake walnut blast and MAF in one combined job — the customer pays once, you pay no return visits, and the car runs like new.

Codes usually seen alongside P0100 on BMW

  • P0101
  • P0102
  • P0401
  • P0299

Symptoms drivers report with P0100

  • Black smoke on diesel acceleration (over-fuelling because ECU can't trust the airflow reading)
  • Rough or 'hunting' idle at traffic lights — RPM wanders between 700 and 950
  • Hesitation off the mark, then a sudden shove of power as the ECU falls back to a default air-map
  • MPG drops 5–10 in mixed driving — the ECU can't run closed-loop trims without valid MAF data
  • Engine surges at steady 50–60 mph motorway cruise
  • Sometimes resets itself after key-off / key-on and drives normally for a day
  • Often stored alongside P0101 (range) or P0102 (low input) — same root cause

Repairs that clear P0100

  • Clean MAF with dedicated cleaner spray
  • Replace MAF sensor
  • Inspect wiring and connector
  • Replace air filter
