Intake VANOS over-advanced on BMW — N42/N46/N52/N54/N55 VANOS solenoids and cam bolts are the usual causes.
BMW P0011 — Intake VANOS over-advanced on BMW — N42/N46/N52/N54/N55 VANOS solenoids and cam bolts are the usual causes. Typical UK independent garage cost: £180–£1400.
What actually causes P0011 on a BMW
BMW P0011 is typically a sticky intake VANOS solenoid (oil sludge from extended service intervals) or, on N54/N55, the well-documented intake VANOS bolt loosening that BMW issued a TSB for. On older N42/N46 4-cyl engines, the entire VANOS unit can fail. The 'rough cold start with low oil pressure' complaint usually accompanies it.
BMW engines that log P0011
- N52 3.0 (E90 330i, E60 530i, E83 X3)
- N54 3.0 twin-turbo (335i, 135i, Z4 35i)
- N55 3.0 single-turbo (335i F30, 535i F10)
- N46 2.0 (E90 318/320i)
How we diagnose P0011 on a BMW
- ISTA: read intake cam timing error at warm idle — >5° suggests solenoid or VANOS
- Remove and inspect both VANOS solenoids — clean filter screens in brake cleaner
- Check oil level, condition and service history — BMW long-life is the enemy of VANOS
- On N54/N55, check for TSB intake VANOS bolt service action — torque check + thread-locker fix
- Only after the above, consider the VANOS unit itself
The common misdiagnosis to avoid
Don't condemn the VANOS unit until you've removed and cleaned the solenoids — 70% of BMW P0011 codes clear with a £90 solenoid clean + fresh oil and filter.
BMW P0011 repair cost in the UK
Expect £180–£1400 including parts and labour at an independent garage. Main-dealer quotes on BMW are usually higher for the same job, and the spread exists because the cheap cause and the expensive cause throw the same code — pay for the diagnosis before you pay for parts.
Service campaign / TSB note
BMW issued service action SI B 11 02 13 covering N54/N55 intake VANOS bolt loosening.
Bob's workshop tip
BMW N52 engines particularly love a fresh 0W-40 LL-04 oil and a solenoid clean — many P0011 codes on these cars are simply screaming for an oil change at half the long-life interval.
Codes usually seen alongside P0011 on BMW
- P0014
- P0015
- P0016
Symptoms drivers report with P0011
- Engine rattles like a 'bag of nails' for 3 seconds on a cold start.
- The car felt fine on the motorway, but now it stalls every time I stop at a roundabout.
- Noticeable 'flat spot' or hesitation when trying to overtake in 3rd gear.
- Lumpy, hunting idle that makes the gearstick vibrate.
- Fuel economy has tanked—getting about 10mpg less than usual.
Repairs that clear P0011
- Engine flush and oil change
- Replace VVT solenoid
- Replace cam phaser if needed
